Ankur Jain I want to get some opinions: how do you think we can better use social media to help solve some of today's most pressing issues (such as alternative energy, education, and health)? Do you think we are using the internet in an effective way? Or is there a better way to leverage all the social networks we are connected to?

We can't expect the tools to do the work. It is the people behind the tool that are responsible for the end results.
So Ankhur, I believe in the power of social media tools to deliver, educate the masses to act accordingly....not just words. Action speaks louder than words, however words are needed to fuel the action.

I agree, we're just beginning to see how great of a tool social media can be. However, at the moment I feel that many internet users are utilizing their social networks for personal reasons (to connect with friends). I feel that it is our responsibility (social media marketers, entrepreneurs, etc) to help push the general public to using the internet to help create change on a daily basis, just as they check their email, facebook and other accounts daily. It's just a matter of figuring out how to create the shift...

Seems I am not alone in this experience.

@Angelo as many of the others have said, the "insanity" others mention seems to really be just a difference of thinking or behavior from the norm. I agree with most here, entrepreneurs are, by nature, different.

I enjoy the paradigm explained in the book E-Myth. There are three types of people, Entrepreneurs, Managers, and Artists. Entrepreneurs, by nature, thrive on taking risk. They are afraid, just like everyone else, but they take the risk anyway.

To complete; Managers are driven by organization and systemization, and ultimately optimization at the measurable level.

Artists are driven by quality production, always striving to make it bigger, better, more, etc.

All three skills are required for a business at all times. Often one person fulfills multiple roles (e.g. I am currently the manager and entrepreneur of my company.) This is not ideal, since working outside of one's core ability leads to stress and eventually burnout.

Sara Gallagher Something embarrassing happened to me today. I was catching up with an old friend and she was asking me about my blog. I told her that it was part of my effort to establish a "personal brand" online, yada yada. Then she asked: "so what is your personal brand?" Ha! I had been so busy trying to follow the steps to create an online presence (blog, tweet, comment, read, converse) that I never thought about how I would describe my "brand" succinctly to a friend...an "elevator speech" if you will.

I write a blog called "Gears and Shifts" that discusses the workplace experience and career dynamics. It's not career advice, per se, because I tend to be more analytical and descriptive than prescriptive.

If I had to pare down my brand even further, I would say that I want to be known as someone who sees things other people don't see. That's why I used the term "circumspect observer."

TOP IDEA: Rachel Puckett What do you think is Gen Y's unique take on social entrepreneurship? How can we harness social media, internet savy and our Gen Y work expectations (ex: fulfillment at work or efficiency) to further social causes while still making a salary? What are some innovative models of non-profits or socially responsible businesses that we can attribute to our Generation? I'm thinking private/public blends or companies that also found non-profits (ex: Google.com & Google.org). How can WE contribute?

We started with the belief that the key to improving our world lies in uniting the next generation of leaders to develop globally impactful innovations. To this end, Kairos has built a member base consisting of some of the brightest students from top universities around the world. Along with guidance from some of today’s foremost leaders, these students are working together to use entrepreneurship and innovation in tackling some of today’s most daunting issues including alternative energy, education, and health. Kairos members hold a common belief that they will ultimately Do Well by Doing Good.

Mazarine I'm not sure I would agree the nonprofit system is broken, it is a bit complex, it isn't generally easy, but it does work.

Rachel, I think more hybrid socially responsible businesses will emerge in the near future. Toms shoes, Give water, and others are moving in the right direction with this sustainable social entrepreneurship where revenue is being generated, the world is being improved, and they don't have to beg since they have great products that people would buy in general.

Ankur, neat site I'm just reading it now, how does one get involved with the group? Is it exclusive or open to all college entrepreneurs? I'm off to Arizona State University this fall and am an entrepreneur, my major is business management entrepreneurship since I couldn't decide on a "real" major.

TOP IDEA: Kim N. Campbell If someone who was unemployed had to pick one task to perform daily in order to get a job, what would that be? There is SO much out there on resume writing, twitter, blogging, informational interviewing. What creative job hunting technique do you think would give someone the best bang for their buck?

Choose one piece, whether it's a belt, a great pair of heels or an amazing blouse that shows off your personality. When you feel confident and look great, you'll likely be more outgoing, approachable and ultimately successful in your job search.
