TOP IDEA: Allison Cheston At the risk of repeating myself, I am interviewing college grads up to age 30 who were not that engaged in high school and college but have blossomed in their careers. Are you someone like that? Would you like to be interviewed for my upcoming book? If so, please let me know if you will spend a half hour by phone with me. Career advice included, gratis! I just saw this and wow, you are doing something AMAZING. Long story short, I'm volunteering at an alternative type of "school." When is your book coming out? This will be a great resource to promote on our website for prospective parents.

TOP IDEA: Allison Cheston Don't ever ask a good contact to provide something you yourself can do, like a list of organizations in his field. Ask him for the things that are hard to find, like a connection to the right person at an organization where you want to work or do an internship. It's a common mistake younger people make.

I think this mindset should extend past just your contacts to asking anyone for something you can find yourself. Too often I think we ask others for information, instead of asking how to find that information, which is much more valuable.

I am about to finish the book the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Having read lots of books published during the latest decade, I found books like the 7 Habits are real classics. It inspires me to search for the timeless principles and write my own scripts of integrity, victory and interdependence. I also learned to "be efficient with things, but effective with people." Now I place relationships higher than business, and strive for win-win in almost all situations. Have you read this book?

I just finished those 2 and am also reading Druecker's "Essential Essays" - which is equally brilliant. His chapter 9, on management and dealing with people (and the utmost importance he places on putting people in the right roles within an organization) is something I will always strive for as I work through various business positions.

Jana Schuberth Have you ever been in the situation that you just didn't know what you wanted anymore? Like, so far in your life you were always driven, knew what you wanted from your career and went for it but suddenly you lost track and ground into a hold? What did you do about it?

Jana,

Laurice, Cheryl and Lanny gave some powerful advice. What you might also want to consider is: 1) What is most important to you, Jana, the person. 2) What can you not live without? 3) Has there been a trigger event that made you question the direction you were heading in? What are your values or something that you won't compromise on.

I don't think that you're in a rut as much as your priorities and wants changed. There's nothing wrong with not knowing what you want and simply waiting until it becomes clear.

Give yourself the time and space to actually hear your inner voices about what you need.

I've gone from being career driven out of college to realizing that I was not willing to sacrifice time with my family for a senior executive position. My priorities and needs have shifted many times in my life and in some cases, it has been the polar opposite.

I was a few years back with a career as a CPA that I hated which made me do all those things you said, I hired a coach and ultimately retrained to be a coach myself. I now help people to get unstuck and was just posting the question to see how people deal with this kind of scenario :-)

I am glad to hear that you have made changes in your life to lead a happier one... pleasure to meet you!

I know I want some flexibility as to when and where I work so I can spend my summer months and holidays with family back home in MN, so perhaps teaching is the way to go for me. Being an extrovert I know I need to work with people so working at home all the time probably isn't going to work for me.

TOP IDEA: Angie Paxton Here's a strange concept: As a relatively young, relatively bright person I have a plethora of opportunities before me. Yet, I've been almost paralized because I'm not sure which is the right one. I can't decide whether to go to grad school to follow my passions, try to get a better-paying job in my field so I can afford to travel again, or move out of state to shake things up. I believe there are many paths to be taken, all full of success and joy. But how do I choose?

Cheryl Roshak: Angie, you are in an enviable situation blessed with many talents and options, yet you didn't mention what passions you wish to follow. Are they ...MoreAngie, you are in an enviable situation blessed with many talents and options, yet you didn't mention what passions you wish to follow. Are they on the same career path or are you thinking of new directions? Only you have the answer to your question within actually. What is calling to you at the moment? Forget practicalities, if money weren't an issue, just fantasize, what would your heart tell you to do? All your options sound good if there is a reason or purpose behind them. Why are you considering just these three and what will you gain from each of them if you were to choose each of them? Life is all about choices, always, and each choice takes you to a different crossroad where there will be other choices. Fear of making the wrong choice is what is holding you back. There are no wrong choices really, just different paths that will take you different places. So open yourself up to what you really want for yourself, it will come to you if you don't put limits or a time frame on this decision. Do some research and explorations. Best to you, trust in yourself.

In thinking about the questions Cheryl asked, I pause to fantasize and remember saying out loud a few weeks ago, "If I could only get paid to observe people's behavior and analyze it..." Oh yeah, that's what researchers do! I'm so going to grad school. I've moved across the country (and even the world) before, and I've gotten different/better jobs before. I've never been to grad school!

Most of it is rhetoric as Indy just doesn't have the scale that the coasts have. However, keep working your local network in Indy--that is the best approach to a smaller market. I think there's some truly inspirational people out there as per any Generation, it's just that time hasn't passed enough yet to truly see their impact.

I guess you probably wouldn't have heard of Regeneration (http://www.regeneration.org.nz/) which is an NZ based program/network of young people who're on the ground training to, making, documenting, and sharing their positive change projects.

You might also be interested in inspiringstories.org.nz - this is a good friend's organisation with a big mission. They're awesome too.

It's out there, it's happening - perhaps we just need to know how to connect with it and teach people to share it with the world as effectively as Gillette can communicate the benefits of a 7 blade shaving system....

@Kristine, interesting area consumer research - I studied a lot of 'behavioural aspects of marketing' (the academic version basically) at Uni and was quite fascinated (and scared) by some of what I learnt. There's some interesting software out there for discovering social media trends as they're rising now too. I hope someone's researching the rise and rise of sustainable products & truly green companies.
