Rebecca Thorman I want to learn PHP, AJAX and how to build a CMS. How do I go about it? While I am familiar with code from my blog, I would like links to straight-up beginner resources. How do I set up a coding environment on my computer? What are the best tutorials and resources or even classes available on the web? Thanks in advance...

I am using XAMPP as well, but only because the group recommended it and it ended up being easier than what the book suggested. I think the book is great and is very easy and clear - plus, there are lots of great online resources that align with each chapter. For me, I like being able to mark up the book as well. Hope that helps! After the Head First book, I also have a book called PHP and MySql for Web Devlelopment which is part of the Web Developers series. It looks pretty good, but certainly more advanced than the Head First book I'm doing now.

Rebecca,

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but how has the experience of learning PHP & MySQL been treating you?

Once you've gotten some experience with the basics, I'd recommend using that experience in a true LAMP stack.

There are 2 easy (easier...) ways to move in that direction:
- virtualize a LAMP server locally (using VirtualBox, Parallels, etc.), or
- set up a virtualized server through RackSpace, AWS, or similar.

If you're planning to stick with it, it is important to break away from the Windows-based stack. Linux-based stacks tend to be more performant and robust, and don't suffer with the issues inherent in the Windows-targeted implementation of PHP. It is very likely that any professional opportunities that you'll encounter will require LAMP experience over X/WAMP experience.

I personally believe that people should take ownership of their content and running their own blog whether that's WordPress, Drupal or whatever. It's just important not to create all your content inside of corporate silos. It's better for someone to publish on a WordPress blog with a plugin that pushes their posts to Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.

YouTube is a little different because 1) it's hard for average people to encode and publish video on the web without the help of a YouTube, Vimeo, or the like. 2) They aren't creating their content on YouTube, but rather they are just publishing it. In theory they could cross post to Vimeo if YouTube banned them.

The idea came from being in the industry already and I spotted a gap in the market for what I went on to do. Regarding target demographic this grew as the business expanded and we managed that growth. As the business flourished in growth we always developed into new services. Personally you start of with an idea and you cannot help but develop into new markets/services. Whatever works and makes the customer happy! Plus making profit helps

Until then, there is no character displayed.

If you were to map morals onto character I would suggest when the action that is taken comes at a cost to one's self in order to uphold a moral. Alternatively its the degree to which we adjust our morals to suit our actions.

Lets take a moral on lying. "I never lie" would be something that you would often be in a position to test, and a moral that many people lying on a couch might truly believe is important. However, the action then taken after being in a position to take credit for someone else's work measures the character.

This notion of character becomes more interesting in the above scenario if the other person doesn't want the credit (or doesn't need it, or won't be around to receive credit). There is little downside to lying other than one taking an action which contradicts a moral. If one sticks by the moral, I believe thats a sign of character.

Nikita T. Mitchell I struggle with the idea of being an entrepreneur. Some days I'm like "Hell yea I need to do my own thing" and some days I'm like "Nah, that's not really for me". Now is that fear? Linda A. Hamilton: In reading the posts above I sometimes wonder if people are confusing entrepreneurship with being self-employed. They have different aspects, yet ...MoreIn reading the posts above I sometimes wonder if people are confusing entrepreneurship with being self-employed. They have different aspects, yet are the same. I agree with Jaime that you can be an entrepreneur and still work for another company. This is common and in some companies it's welcome! Zuckerberg took an idea and made it work; he's both an entrepreneur and self-employed. Fred Smith had an idea that was rejected by his college professors, but moved forward with it and the rest is history. Again an entrepreneur who is self-employed. My dad was self-employed, but in a sense he was an entrepreneur because he knew how to add value to his clothing business within the farming communities and make it something substantial in the Midwest generating a customer base that spanned several states. That's pretty bold for a family business that started in 1913 and survived the Great Depression.

Being an entrepreneur doesn't mean you have to be self-employed. If that's what works, then by all means go for it. But it could mean you contribute a new idea while working within another company. Being a self-employed entrepreneur brings all kinds of other concepts into focus because now you have to generate the paycheck from scratch. It all comes down to are you willing to take the risks, perhaps partner with others to develop your ideas--like Oprah has done within her empire--and add value to your market albeit from another angle?

I personally think being an entrepreneur is separate from being self-employed. If you work for someone else and pursue your only entrepreneurial ideas on your own, go for it. However, if you step out on the platform of being a self-employed entrepreneur, you take on greater challenges. You can be both, but it's not a part of the definition... entrepreneurship is able adding value to something that hasn't already been considered. Whether you do this as part of a business or as a self-employed executive is an added choice, not part of the entrepreneurial definition -- at least not in what I think of when considering Entrepreneurship.

TOP IDEA: Monica Valentinelli You can be creative with your fiction e-books! I published one of the first enhanced e-books entitled "The Queen Of Crows" back in March. Featured on Suvudu.com, this e-book experiment worked for me because I collaborated with other talented people like James Semple, a movie composer who helped me out with the book trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMZ2NFd_YXE The lesson I learned, is that you don't have to "go it alone" in order to create something brilliant.
