Nola Akiwowo Just have to ask.... I love my current gig at my non-profit, and would like to prep myself for upper management / executive status one day. Should I consider grad school in non-profit management or public policy? Should I just take certificate courses? Or should I stick with learning on the job?

Hannah Kane I'm running into some resistance at my internship for my MSW program-- I have a lot of cool ideas that I think would really enhance my role and the organization's work, but my supervisor never goes for my ideas, even though my current role leaves me with a lot of down time that I think I could fill with my projects. Should I just drop it? How could I implement my ideas without causing problems with my supervisor?

I run into this issue as a recent graduate who was an intern in the same department at the same company where I now work full-time. I think Kimberly has a great point, though. I'd focus on communicating that you need more x - challenging projects, exposure to improving process, etc - and ask in what ways your boss thinks you can get that experience. Let us know how your "negotiation" with him/her goes!

For example "Do you think XYZ might be a viable alternative?". Then be sure to ask why it will or will not work. Gets your ideas out there in a way that appears deferential to your superiors without sounding like you think you know more than they do.

Hannah Kane How well do you know the nonprofit sector? This great video from Philanthropy Reports breaks down the makeup of the nonprofit sector and shows just how much it contributes to our society and our economy. http://bit.ly/a71Nsb

Rebecca Thorman I came from the non-profit world and now work for a start-up. I love my job, but lately I've been itching to do more on-the-ground grassroots type work. Like two positions ago, I raised money for a food pantry and got to meet the people I was helping every day. I miss that. I job-hop to find more meaning in work... but I don't want to hop from this job for a variety of reasons. I still feel conflicted though. How do you find more meaning in your job or side projects? (beyond volunteering).

Take the time to skecth out what is really meaningful to you before considering another move/hop (internally or externally). I tell people to spend an afternoon at Starbucks with a blank sheet of paper and see what you come up with. You may be surprised!

I frequently turn down clients if I don't believe in their mission; and I frequently take on clients for FAR less money because i do believe in their mission.

Best way to do what you want, make money, and find meaning in what you do; start your own business and make your own decisions.

@Rebecca - based on your blog following alone, I'm sure you could get a lot of business.

I don't have your following and I don't even have time to put up a website, but am good at what I do and based on word of mouth...I'll make more money this year than when I was a SVP at a Fortune 100 company...and more importantly...I believe in everything I do and find meaning in everything I do.

Take a risk...you're only young once. I'd be happy to help out ( ;

Jason H. Parker Have a friend who just moved to Portland to take a nonprofit job. Apparently the organization is imploding from within, and she's considering getting out of the nonprofit world. I'd love for her to finally be able to find a stable organization in the nonprofit sector so she doesn't get pushed into the corporate world (thereby losing her soul). Any advice from the Brazen Community? She's probably the smartest, most financially capable person I know. Any job leads would be appreciated, also. :-)

And, @emily, I agree on your point as well. Really wish we could set up our organizations to be development based rather than profit motivated.

Elizabeth Kohlenberg I'm a financial analyst for an automotive manufacturer and would like to transition to nonprofit. Any advice?

Eileen Terrien: I'd suggest looking for npo boards to sit on. They need financial advice and know how and are a good way to get your name out there.
