p, please help me understand why some internships require candidates be able to receive college credit to be eligible. i'm not in college. haven't been for a long time. but i just saw an internship w/a stellar production company that i would love a shot at. production is something i recently fell into as a freelancer. i love it, have some experience and want to learn more from this amazing team. but i can't, simply because i'm not in college. what the hell? is there a way to buck the system?!

I say, keeping trying to buck the system ... go for it!

And. One more thing. I think everyone should try both: Staying at home with kids and not. It's like everyone should try being a cashier or a waitress. The more different types of work you have done, the more empathy you have in the world for people who do work that you don't do. We should use our work to understand other people and ourselves better so that we can be more kind. If we are not aiming to use our 8 hours a day (or whatever) to make us better people then what are we doing????

All the reasons you've mentioned, the reasons I've mentioned, as well as the fact that it doesn't even sound interesting. "Oh, look, my kid did exactly the same things in exactly the same order as every other kid ever!" What's so neat about it? 128 weeks ago

@Bennett - Also I have to highly disagree with "Plus, if you truly think about it, VERY FEW people who work actually contribute anything of REAL value to SOCIETY. Most actually produce negative effects..."
There may be some, even many, who produce negative effects, but I think the vast majority of the workforce is doing SOMETHING productive and ultimately beneficial to/valued by someone. The economy wouldn't run otherwise.

The system is far from positive on the whole. The system provides monetary rewards for exploiting resources. The more you exploit, the more money you get. The more you climb the ladder, the less you are exploited directly, and the more you get to do the exploiting...
I'd love to discuss this further, but you are right, perhaps this is not the place...

Warning: This group is becoming Penelope unedited. This is what I'd sound like without an editor. Because my editor is already overwhelmed with my blog and my tweets. Okay. So, Is this a career topic? I just met with the farmer. I tried to convince him to stay with me. I know TOTALLY LAME. I know. But i couldn't stop myself. And he told me that he knows I'll be fine. He said I should just buy a farm. But I think I want to be a housewife. I don't want to buy a farm. I want to marry a farm. Crap.

Warning. I'm about to do a very bad personal branding move. Do not try this at home....
I'm so sad today that I can't think straight. And I can't get any work done. But then I thought, well, maybe if I were chatting in my group then that would
1. distract me from being sad and
2. count as me working, since really, on some level, it is my job to be doing this group. I mean, even when we are talking about Lance's (questionable) dating tactics, it still counts as work for me.

I find if work is busy it distracts me (thank god), but then smthing happens &I lose my shit. Week after week, though, I stay longer, get more done, &enjoy it more. I am so thankful my workplace is flexible enough that if I leave at 2pm, no-one bats an eye.
That said: I am so sorry. Obviously this doesn't in any way make YOU a less smart, witty, fun, desireable, loveable person. 128 weeks ago

Ok, you people were right. I invited her for dinner but she said no-go, we're doing drinks at a local joint. She did say she was impressed that I cook. For the record, I think it's lame that women won't come over for dinner on a first date. And don't give me that safety crap. If you want to get to know someone, you break bread with them.

We build young men's capacity to challenge harmful aspects of traditional masculinity, to value alternative visions of male strength, and to embrace their vital role as allies with women and girls in fostering healthy relationships and gender equity."

I don't think Lance meant to be offensive or insensitive, but its important to address comments about rape/safety that negate the seriousness of the issue. As Amy said it would serve *you* well to respect other people's personal choices when it comes to their boundaries and safety. 133 weeks ago
