“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”  - Edgar Allan Poe
Just as I was thinking about writing this post, I came across Jay’s 9 part Dream Analysis series over at Inner Noodle (I’ve linked to the latest post - 5 of 9).  My version is the quick guide, but if you are looking for more in depth information about interpreting dreams, go check out Jay’s series.  (It’s excellent!!)
Dreams have fascinated people for as long as we have been dreaming.  Dreams can be strange, enjoyable and just plain fun to explain to someone else in the morning.  I often spend time recording and interpreting my own dreams.  For one, I think it’s fun, but also, I find that interpreting my dreams leads me to inspect areas of my life I am not aware of or that I am neglecting.  Dreams provide me with clues about what steps I should take next and have helped me understand my waking life.  Here is a simple ...More

Here is a simple process I use to interpret my dreams.

Remember and record your dreams - At certain times I find it difficult to remember my dreams and at other times I am able to recall them vividly when I wake up.  I find that one of the best ways to remember your dreams in the morning is to prep yourself at night.  Just like you can wake up without an alarm clock by repeatedly thinking to yourself the time you need to get up, if you think to yourself “remember my dreams” you will have a better success rate.  Also, make sure you have something to write down (or type) your dreams with close by in the morning.
Notice the parts of the dream that stick out to you - Before you reach for a “dream dictionary” that lists dream symbols and their meanings, think about the parts of the dream that made an impression on you.  Those are the things you want to analyze.  Maybe you dreamed of a childhood friend that you have not thought of in years, or you had a certain emotion during the dream, or the color of an object stood out to you.  Pay attention to these things.
List all associations/meanings that come to mind - For all of the things that stand out to you, brainstorm ideas/thoughts/feelings that you associate with that thing.  For instance, if a childhood friend shows up in your dream, ask yourself - “what was our relationship like?” “what was his/her personality like?” “what do I think of when I think of that friend?”.  Don’t censor yourself.  If you need some ideas, this is where you can turn to a dream dictionary, but I would brainstorm by yourself first.
Notice how the things you picked out relate to each other in the dream - So, if your childhood friend is driving a silver car, think about the relationship between your friend, the car, and the color silver in the dream if those are the things that stand out to you.
Ask yourself how this fits in to your life now - At this point you want to connect the meanings you have discovered and what’s happening in your life right now.  Just ask yourself “how does this relate to my life now?” and see what you get.  For example, maybe this childhood friend used to boss you around, and when you interpreted her that’s what came to mind first.  Is there anyone in your life right now doing the same?  How are the situations similar and how did you interact with this friend in the dream?  This may give you clues as to what steps you need to take next.

Dream interpretation is not an exact science.  A dream is a web of meanings and symbols that needs to be sifted through to get to a message, but ultimately a dream is what it means to you.
Do you believe that dreams are meaningful?  What’s been your experience with dream interpretation?  Let us know what you think in the comment section.

depth of feeling: yep. nuff said about the best bits; worst bits, the silliest things absolutely hammer me flat: i've had people really concerned like i was physically in pain or something - just have to tell them it's ok, just a silly thought.

relationships. always been a strange one this, for me. the word "relationship" implies "sharing the same goal". that's what a relationship is. if you share the same goal with someone, you _have_ a relationship. no same goal equals no relationship. and... my goals are pretty far-out, so i don't have that many relationships! so - i'm a bit pathological about relationships, but those that i have i really appreciate.

perception of the world: acute. so sharp i cut myself. absorb information and things like a sponge, but it's such a high degree of observation, it used to be overwhelming. now i kinda stay away from things, that keeps the signal-to-noise ratio down, and i can focus on things i'm here to do.

dedication to what i love: ... mmm... yeah, i'd say so. sort-of. for me, it's more like this: i see things that other people don't: i remember the disparate facts and can make the connections that other people wouldn't. i think, "that's not right. those people are going against the way i think things should be, because if things were like i think they ought to be, they'd be more efficient / have more opportunities to take advantage of if they wanted to / feel more empowered. there's lots of people being disadvantaged, here.". then i think, "is it in my power, with my knowledge of computer technology, do i have the time resources knowledge and money to do something about this, yes or no?" if answer equals yes, then act, otherwise no, drop it like a stone. simple, pathological and clear-cut. completing the loop is itself the reward; overcoming the technical challenges along the way are the things i love, and fulfilling the overall goal is definitely the cherry on top of the cake.

so - yeah. close. but i'd say i'm much more pathological than most. you're helping me to fulfil a goal, or you're not. you've got something to contribute to one of the goals (hello. tell me and we'll have fun with it), or you haven't (bye. have a nice life).

Oddly enough, sometimes more certainty doesn't feel right to me - especially starting out. And trying to find more certainty, just because it would seem to be better, can sometimes lead you off your path, I think. I don't know that uncertainty always feels comfortable, my for me it's often more rewarding.

The outcomes aren't as limiting and there's more room to take alternative routes along the way. I guess if you're prone to wandering off the beaten path than uncertainty makes a lot of sense.

Amanda Linehan Hi INFPs - Just wanted to recommend an interesting INFP blog, entitled (shockingly enough) "infp Blog" http://www.infpblog.com/. Some really good thoughts on life with an infp personality type. The most recent post is "Happiness and Turning 40." Would be curious to know what you think about it (the blog in general, not just the post).

Karla Mercado I'm probably the only one, but I'm really bummed about Juliet. :(

Karla Mercado: I sure hope so! Juliet's one of my favorite characters, and I thought her story with Sawyer's really nice too. I hope you're right.

And to resolve it Juliet has to be out of the picture. Unfortunate, but for the sake of the story I think it had to be written. We might see her again though, you never know ;)

Amanda Linehan Have some leftover chicken you need to use? I made these enchiladas last night. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/chicken-enchiladas-rec... They tasted great and used up the rest of a rotisserie chicken I had gotten the night before. Fairly easy to make too. :)
