Penelope Trunk I just read a great article about what makes girls successful: travel and alone time. http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20129513,00.html I'm amazed. But I think that travel and alone time did make me feel very independent and self-reliant. What affected you as a child to encourage you to be successful as an adult? What makes you do the extra work that is required, for example, on Brazen Careerist? This place is a magnet for people who expect themselves to be very successful.

Granted, there were more bad examples than good from teenage years on, but the one thing that was constant was my dad and my brother's work ethic. Seeing two strong role models feel good about accomplishments they worked towards pushed me to work hard for everything I wanted. I was an "only" child in the sense that my siblings were in their mid twenties and had their own families when I was born, so I was spoiled in some senses, but I always *enjoyed* working for what I wanted ... even when I didn't have to.

I believe solo and family travel, time alone, reading, and competition definitely influenced my way of life. I was also deeply influenced by my religious upbringing and schooling which has it's pros and cons.:)

I was a media escort to SR VP/President of Campbell Soup, Denise Morrison, (http://bit.ly/cpCotS) and her sisters nicknamed the Sullivan Sisters. I really wish they'd write a book because each of them have very powerful positions as a result of their upbringing.

Here's a brief overview: http://bit.ly/b7Cm8v Thanks for sharing yours Penelope. Always enjoy reading what you have to discuss.

Penelope Trunk Today I have a six-hour block to catch up on work. I knew it was coming all week, so every time I didn't get something done, I'd say, "I'll do it on Sunday." Now I have a list a mile long of stuff to do, and it's intimidating. So I think six hours is too long to set aside. I need smaller chunks of time, dispersed throughout the week more frequently. Do you find that you have an optimum length time slot for getting things done? What works best.

I tend to do things in matrathon blocks. If I can find a 5-15hr chunk of time and be peak-productive through most of it I can get a remarkable amount of stuff done (e.g. I learned a semesters worth of accounting in 15hrs one weekend, not recommended). Waiting for that block to come creates a lot of stress as the things to do in it build up in the meantime.

However, I also limit the number/list of tasks in each block by putting a time estimate and level of effort required to finish each thing on the list. It helps in letting others know when they can expect output from you as well.

HRMargo I joined a long time ago, didn't use it at all, but when I saw that Amanda Hite was leading a webinar, I knew it was time to jump back on "Brazen Careerist," cuz I sure as hell am Brazen!

Amanda Hite "Penelope, How do you make money blogging?" <- Just f'ing kidding.. Caught the tail end of the Webinar last night your hair looked great. At first I thought you were doing the 1 long ear ring 80's rocker thing but I was relieved to discover it was an ear piece.

Kim N. Campbell This question came up during a twitter chat today and I want to pose it here; Do employers hire you for your proven results or your ideas? I'm sure there's a bit of both...but are they given equal weight? And how do blogs help you build more "proven results" to strengthen your profile entering the job market.

118 weeks ago from Ask Penelope Trunk!

Christina Brown: Ideas with grounded results to back it up. I really hope that is what they look up in a future employee.

I believe this generally applies:
they hire you for your general competencies, that are the basis on which you will build up, your potential.
Then comes your motivation for the position and the company's mission.
Last but not least, they look for a match between your personality and company's people, if you are a pleasant person to work with.

@Amanda. So bummed about my hair. This is a problem working with all 20 yr old guys. I ask them if my hair is okay and they say yes without looking. I am thinking that you always look so good in your videos. I should hire you as my stylist.

Penelope Trunk I'm redesigning my blog -- thinking about all the stuff that should be there that isn't there. I was wondering if you have ideas. Examples: The categories I have are useless. But what would be useful to you? Or, I was thinking there should be an Asperger's discussion board, but maybe it would just be a bunch of people with no discussion skills. Hahaha. Any other thoughts? Sidenote: I notice that figuring out the content of one's blog feels a lot like figuring out who you want to be.

It has "About this", "About BC" and "P's Guide to" if you're on one of those pages you have to fish around to find your way back to the actual blog. Consider adding an option on that menu bar to the blog itself. And, after you leave the home page there is no navag back. I wanted to check out your speaking and couldn't find my way back easily once I was in.
