Rebecca Thorman I tend to get things done quicker than our President can sign off on them since he has a ton going on. He often wants to ensure he isn't being a roadblock, and we talk strategies to ensure that doesn't happen. Lately, I've noticed he says "Oh, email me that I'll talk with Brian (our CEO) about it" and then never does. But I've noticed if I print out what I need approved, and put it in front of him, he's more likely to remember. What small things like this help you interact w/ your boss?

Emily Jasper: @Rebecca, we live by our calendars. I'll be sad to go back to a less structured environment, but who knows, maybe it'll be fine.

Also, the shorter the email, the better! I've noticed some managers will get it done if it's a note, but some will just stick it in the pile and it will still never gt done. It all depends on the person's preferred interaction, and sometimes boils down to the medium of communication they get bombarded with the least!

Alyssa Carter My boss and I work really well together on projects, but I find that one thing that makes our work relationship stand out is the fact that we have a personal relationship, too. Spending so much time together, we often branch off work topics and aren't afriad to share personal stories or life outside of work, and my boss can often provide outstanding advice and perspective for not only work, but also many other aspects of life. Where do you fit on the work/life balance with your boss?

It was "good" in that we connected better, had more open lines of communication, and ulitmately because I knew my boss genuinely cared for me. It was "bad" because it took me longer to leave than I should have (no more upwards mobility, I was already at the top), when I did leave - I still compare every relationship to the one I had with him...In general; go with your gut. Just know - that like with any relationship, there is a chance that you may get hurt. However in this sense, you have to know that when you get hurt in "business", you can't go to her on a personal level. I actually just wrote a blog on this...http://bizrelationships.wordpress.com/2010/05/30/does-your-mentor-ever-leave-you/

Alyssa Carter Anyone feel like all they do is work, and work out? I work 8-5 every day, and then typically go to the gym for 2 hours after work. By the time I get home it's usually after 8pm, and then I'm eating dinner right before bed. Sometimes I feel like I'm packing 3 meals with me to work - breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner! Tips on any easily portable, healthy meals?

That way, you could always take dinner on the go with a container with some brown rice and then a second small portion of shrimp or pre cooked white chicken (you can buy it in the deli section by foster farms)and then just add a zip lock of either broccali heads or snow peas and perhaps maui onion or even celery and carrots work well and zap it in the workplace microwave for about 2 minutes. Wella! Top with a splash of soy sauce or tempura or even hot chili sprinkles and your dinner is rockin in less than 5 min and healthier than fast food at Mickie D! ps...you can even add a few raw almonds or cashews after microwaving for added crunch and fiber. YUMO ;)

What really helps me get through the day with enough energy is small meals every two or three hours to keep blood sugar levels steady. My favorite quick meals are oatmeal, Chobani greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs, green tea, and lots of water!

Alyssa Carter I read a statistic once and was shocked at the number of employees who quit their jobs based on poor management. Poor management was the #1 reason I left my old workplace, and now I have a phenomenal boss - it truly makes your day at work so much better when you have a great relationship with your manager.

Alyssa Carter This is a really interesting topic! I feel like salary talk has become the last taboo in a sense - when was the last time someone asked you what you make without adding "if you feel comfortable sharing" at the end. How are we supposed to know what we should expect without having a baseline? I think some employers keep it in the dark so they can underpay. I think it's hard for new grads to feel comfortable negotiating salaries when they are just so happy to get a job these days!

Alyssa Carter I see by scrolling comments that one measurement tool that was taken into account are green initiatives. I agree with the comments regarding smaller companies/nonprofits, but with lists like this it's usually the big dogs that take the cake. While lists like this are great, I feel like in the end it's the little things that make somewhere a great place to work: like your coworkers. How does one measure that? I know so many people who say "the reason I love working where I do is bc of the people"

Sami Paju Barefoot running is euphoric! Just did high-intensity intervals with fivefinger shoes and then ran back home totally barefeet :)

Akshay Kapur: Not withstanding beaches and grass, how is this even feasible on other surfaces? Five finger shoes maybe.

Sami Paju: I actually run on tarmac with no shoes. I can also run few meters at a time on gravel, but obviously it's not very comfortable.

Alyssa Carter Penelope, what do you think is the greatest challenge today (economy aside) that Gen Y is facing?

133 weeks ago from Ask Penelope Trunk!

Penelope Trunk: So the biggest challenge is to figure out who you are enough to know what you love and can't live without, and what you can give up.

Luke Kittell: The biggest challenge is always the environment: food, weather, natural resources, organic pollution, heavy metals, loss of biodiversity...

Holly Hoffman I started running and doing strength training again after recovering from surgery & am gaining weight. What's up with that?!

137 weeks ago from Fit Freaks

Travis Power: I gained back 10 lbs post surgery to my pre-injury weight quickly. Probably muscle like Alyssa says.
Ryan Stephens: What kind of strength training Holly? Shouldn't gain -much- with higher volume, lower weights, circuit training. Lots of time between sets?

Travis Power I'm even more scared to do the spin classes! So I just go lift weights...I'd rather be a meathead than a slow poke on a bike I guess.
