Island Girl
On a Journey
Sugary Sweet
I graduated from University with Bachelors in Physics in 2004 from Queen Mary University of London. I started working at Standard and Poor’s in London straight out of university, after being an intern there since my first year at University and ever year since. There, I was introduced to the world of finance, risk and credit assessment. In 2006, I completed my Masters in Actuarial Science at Cass Business School in London. I went unto to work as an Analyst at S&P and then as an Actuarial Assistant at AIG.
Currently, I’m not working while my visa application is being processed. In this time, I started a blog and completing a Youth Worker training course. I’m also helping an Art Conflict community organisation and a Rock band with their myspace pages and websites. I’m also volunteering at a Youth Organisation in London in the evenings. I also started an alumni network at http://girlshighschool.ning.com/ for my high school. The wait for my visa has been frustrating because I had to stop working and earning, but I’ve been using the time to further my creative skills and try new endeavours. I’m working on a book of poetry, organisation their illustrations with an artist and as well as improving my drawing skills in illustrations and comic art. I also started up a woman’s group with some friends, after we all complained that it’s so hard to meet up and meet new people while working in London. So far, we’ve had three meetings and a few relaxed sister-hood type events.
I’m 26 years old and I’m not where I thought I will be career wise, but I’m taking every day as it comes, believing that there’s a reason behind every situation and focusing on the positives. I love hanging with my friends and going to gigs. Highlight of my year so far was seeing Grace Jones in action at the Roundhouse in Camden. I love dancing and I’m obsessed with buying and reading books. Buying more than reading it seems, since my To-read list is increasing by 6 books weekly. I’m from the beautiful islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines, so I love everything Caribbean – from chilling, to sailing, to eating, dancing and just having a good time. Life is simple and my plan is to enjoy every moment, in spite of circumstance.
