I came at from the angle of laying the emotional foundation with money to build a successful financial future. I'm curious to hear what you think of it. Was it useful and in line with what you need? I worked in K-12 education for a very long time. I don't mean to sound cynical, but if it's not tested, it's usually not a priority so I am not shocked at the response you've received. Also, it can be seen a a conflicting message. Educators are supposed to be telling their students that education is the great economic equalizer, but when you look hard at the numbers through a financial management lens, it doesn't always show that.

Diana Antholis What if the reason cited for you *not* getting the job is something that is untrue or was never asked to be expanded upon? Someone just posed this situation to me. The job was not offered because of something that was very briefly discussed, but never elaborated. So when this reason was cited , it was a huge surprise. Do you try to explain yourself on the phone while trying not to sound like a child? Or do you just let it go?

The reason given was a clear lie, as they never asked for that information, and would not have had me go through the application process if that were the real reason. I was also told at the start of the application process that I was a "good candidate".

My response: You don't want me. I can't fix that. Good bye. There's no percentage in petitioning people who (a) don't want you, and (b) are willing to lie about it. There's no percentage in trying to get them to tell the truth, either, as you can't.

Truly offensive part: It was a law organization, which should know better. Clearly they were CYA.

Alexandra Levit: I would probably let it go because if someone doesn't want to hire you, he/she will find a reason.

Dave Ellis For the hiring professionals and also the undergrads out there... Do college career centers help people find internships or jobs? In the current economy, career centers are being tasked with ever more duties... mentor, networker, business development professional... some even say "baby-sitter" to millenials who seemingly need to be carried through life. http://bit.ly/dpphyI What do you think? Did / do you utilize a college career center? As a student... as a hiring manager?

The best thing the Career Center did was do a job panel with alumni's. They gave great advice and told us basically...the TRUTH! Plus got some good leads and groundwork for networking. JenG I've had some bad experiences trying to help people get a job that were connected to me through "friends of friends" or further. I know we talk a lot here at Brazen about the power of networking, but it's losing it's sheen for me. Frankly, networking beyond my immed. circle just hasn't delivered the best condidates. I talk about what happened, why flakes are ruining it for the rest of us, and how to get a job anyway in my post "Why Social Networking Isn't Getting You a Job" http://su.pr/1e0MY4

But Im convinced that it is the most powerful career tool, if done right. The power of networking sites like Brazen for example, is in the ability to help you create an initial connection with someone. From there, it is up to you to do the research, meet, question, etc. After you know the person is a good fit, then you can take the next step. Online networking doesn't eliminate the need for all the proper steps, it just makes finding and connecting much easier.

While I'm sure you have the best of intentions, I have a hard time seeing this work out well for people. If a company begins to have a visible interest in a certain school's students, that school's admissions start to become skewed, eventually changing that university into a training institution for a handful of businesses, instead of preparing people for greater careers beyond their first jobs.

I work with people who were laid off from the big 4 accounting firms. They do great work and know what they're doing. They were laid off, because the big 4 accounting firms promote to fill openings, then hire a whole new batch of students. When they hire too many students (and they usually do), they lay off the 1- and 2-year staff until they are back to the number of entry-level positions they want.

I'm just afraid that this kind of partnership will create a sort of catch-and-release program for employers.

@Rebecca, Ouch! But if you are a university and you stop educating people, can you still call yourself a university? It is and always will be the primary function of colleges and universities to educate their students. Most have a career services office, host career events, write letters of recommendation, review resumes, etc., but at the end of the day, no one is promising you a job. You still have to do the work to get the job. But that's part of the education too; learning how to look for jobs, so that you can stand on your own two feet.
