Alexa Johnson Question- The "Objective" line in a resume. Is it necessary anymore? I hear so many conflicting things anymore. I ask because I'm revamping my resume (once again, good grief) for a DC Job Fair for governmental agencies. A friend let me take a peek at his, and I really cannot get behind this "Objective" business... Thoughts?

What matters is what value you will bring to the organization. Ask not what the company can do for you, but ask (well, tell) what you can do for the company.

I wanted something that would stand out, and it seems like Objectives all say the same thing: "To obtain a meaningful position where I can contribute blah blah blah." My resume currently has the following summary statement at the beginning: "Seven years of increasing responsibilities in the eCommerce division of the insurance industry. Concentration in data analysis and voice of the customer initiatives."

Then again, I'm still unemployed, so please factor that into your opinion of this post :)

Alexa Johnson I'm sitting, watching the Red Wings/Coyotes game and it occurs to me-while I can trace my love of the Red Wings to a certain point, I know some sports fans are just born that way. I love my Wings. And sports. Is anyone a born fan? Or a convert at a certain point in your life?

Alexa Johnson Afraid my voice is getting a little scratchy-need some food R&R with TLC to make it unscratchy before work. Hard to chat with people when I can only whisper.

Alexa Johnson I figure I'm almost 24, which means it's prime time to start a savings account. The joys of jumping on the bandwagon way too late. I'm just happy it hasn't left the station.

Ty Unglebower I know many people feel this almost moral need to finish a novel, no matter how much they dislike it. I am not one of those people. So I ask, are you? If not, on average how many pages do you give a novel to grab you before you just abandon it? I usually give it around 50. If I am in a good mood, 100, but if it hasn't done anything for me by then, I move on.

I first read your 'need to finish a novel' question as in _WRITING_ one, seeing how this is a 'creative writing' network!! :-) Made me laugh. As for your question, I usually give a book a couple of tries on dif. days, if it fails to grab me -- I move on. But I have tried harder with the ones everyone is 'supposed' to like... (my least fav. in this category is 'Don Quixote') even if the book is doing nothing for me.

TOP IDEA: Alexa Johnson I'm thinking of buying a decent camera to chronicle my cooking endeavors-I can't help but think that it would be fun.

Alexa Johnson Question-how can you alter a resume to make it more appealing to jobs outside your field of study? Mine is mainly broadcast related, but I have to open my job search to other fields. How can I make my resume look less broadcast heavy? http://www.brazencareerist.com/sites/default/files/Brazen%20Resume.doc Here's the resume-it's up on my profile too. Thanks again!

Showing that you have more diverse skills like being able to use social media well is going to open up your resume to more people as well.

What are you looking to get into, specifically?

I just took a look at your resume, and you might want to add your contact information at the top, a qualifications statement of what you're looking for in position, and make the employer, position, and dates stand out. I could also send you a copy of mine, so you have some formatting ideas. Let me know.

It's not a funny looking work history at all. Mine looked like that once too. It's how you shape it.

I think you should bold or underline the company names or the titles of your role there. Also, I'd put the coffee shop job at the bottom of the page.

Also, change "verbal" in your languages section to "spoken" or some variation. Verbal can mean spoken in some contexts, but I think "oral" or "spoken" do a better job of illustrating the distinction you're trying to make. I'll take another look this evening when I have more time.

Mike Kohn That's great! Glad to see all of the dancers here :) Do you all do it mostly for fun/socially or do you ever compete at all?

Mikko Kemppe: I am beginning to compete in Salsa. But so far I have mostly done it just for fun.

Alexa Johnson I sure know there's no "perfect", but are there some solid "dos and don'ts"? On a whole I am quite frustrated. Glad a group is here to help!

Mike Darga: To me, a good resume is: Short, confident, easily scannable, fact-based (not too much squishy generic stuff like Good Communication Skills)

Sam Puri: In my last role as a recruiter I would say to about 90% of my candidates to list their accomplishments as opposed to job responsibilities.

Alexa Johnson I've read so many different things and rules and whatnot, I feel generally lost...when do you stop editing and just go for it?

139 weeks ago from Resume Feedback

Mike Darga: you're trying to get just a bit more money, a higher title, or into a more exclusive company, that's when really polishing becomes important
139 weeks ago
Mike Darga: The more experience you have, the more difficult a resume gets to write, because you have to start choosing how to present that experience.
