Ryan Paugh I spent part of my Thanksgiving holiday hanging out with friends in Brooklyn. I'm considering it as a solid "maybe" as the next place I'm going to live. Do any of you guys live in Brooklyn? Which neighborhood? What do you like/dislike about it?

Love Ft Greene--great restaurants, BAM, subway access at Atlantic. I'm just across the intersection there in N. Slope--and it's great and convenient as well. I don't like Williamsburg but that's maybe because I like a real neighborhood feel with architecture and coziness--not industrial. I go there to party but wouldn't live there. I only lived once in Manhattan and that's because they literally paid me to (for work--free apt) but otherwise, I never would have moved there because BK is the place to be!

Nicolò Wojewoda What are the world's top nonprofits when it comes to professional development opportunities? I know friends who experienced rapid personal and career growth in places like Google or the Boston Consulting Group, but rarely hear of similar stories from people working in NGOs. Do I have to just accept the fact that if I want to develop professionally within an organizational structure I have to move to the private sector?

They are out there (I work at one) but given that we rarely get tons of publicity for things like professional development (Zappos and Google reign in that area, in the for profit sector, for example) you wont be able to google one and find a match. Also, if you are committed to staying in the sector, this is a great question to ask on an interview.

I would say, in general, target larger organizations and be prepared to take your professional development into your own hands. Organizations like the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network seek to help young nonprofit employees do exactly that: help you identify skills you want and provide opportunities to develop them.

Also, have you approached your employer about professional development support?

Rebecca Thorman My friend Nisha just posted on a study that found that children who grew up in a house with 500+ books stay in school three years longer than kids who grew up in homes with fewer books. (http://ow.ly/1SFEL) Like Nisha, this was certainly true in my case. I was a book worm (I even won an award for reading the most books in kindergarten and was totally down with the Pizza Hut Book It! program) :) and still love to read to this day. What about you?

Allison Jones Catholic-Run Charter Schools Arouse Church-State Concerns -- I saw this article and thought it raised some interesting concerns regarding the impact of Catholic run Charter schools. Could this be a potential new model? Oddly enough KIPP has often been referred to as "The new Catholic School" as many charter schools borrow from the traditional Catholic school model. Go figure. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/04/14/us/AP-US-REL-Religion-Today.h...

I wish someone had given me a good SHAKE and said, "GET REAL! DO YOU WANT TO BE IN DEBT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?" But nobody did. People have acted impressed that I went to this school, and there is no reason for them to be impressed. The quality of the education there is not rigorous. It's subpar. You're right, you really don't get what you pay for, that is a false aphorism.

Allison Jones: Given that these nonprofits (which colleges/universities are--soliciting funds incessantly) are clearly lying and gouging there is a serious ...MoreGiven that these nonprofits (which colleges/universities are--soliciting funds incessantly) are clearly lying and gouging there is a serious ethical issue here that simply searching for a different school wont address. At one point Congress considered making a law that schools would have to reconsider how much debt they required a student to take as parents were taking out extra mortgages. Harvard responded by eliminating loans and many elite schools, like mine, quickly followed suit.

Yet when it comes to college tuition Ive seen (and been in) interesting positions. On the one hand schools like my alma mater, Haverford College, cost up to $50K yet have eliminated loans. I went there on full scholarship, only taking out a small loan to study abroad. On the flip side my sisters were looking to go to less expensive schools yet not getting enough aid (including not enough loan money) to attend, having to defer and ultimately look elsewhere. Additionally my brother has taken out a SHITLOAD of loans to attend his school in the midwest.

The argument when I was younger was that these expensive schools tend to have more money to give away while cheaper schools will force you to carry the bulk of the cost. Reflecting on my family's experiences we each were very different academically, went to different schools, and thus were put on very different paths even though they all pointed to a college education. It is obvious that college can be financially within reach but the requirements (high grades, extra-cirriculars, etc) exclude many.

Rebecca Thorman Whatever happened to when college was free? That would have been nice - no debt? Equal access? I'll take it. This post talks about what's wrong with charging tuition - http://www.good.is/post/whatever-happened-to-when-college-was-free/. One interesting piece of research they bring up is that studies show that lower-income students absorb the message that college is “too expensive,” often as early as the eighth grade. What do you think? Should there be free colleges? Is that even possible?

Ellen Nordahl: Before we focus on eliminating the cost of collegiate education, we need to improve the caliber of free public education students are already ...MoreBefore we focus on eliminating the cost of collegiate education, we need to improve the caliber of free public education students are already receiving. It does little good to introduce another 4 years of free schooling if students are ill-equipped to make the most of the opportunities presented by higher education. What if we emphasized vocational training during high school, showing students that they have more options than college/no college? The university system isn't the right path for everyone, and making it free would do little to encourage students to pursue the career path that is the best fit for their skills and interests.

Her career counseling offfice told her to do that. I can understand why they told her that advice. I was surprised, though. What do you guys think?

If that means downplaying characteristics that may inadvertently hurt your chances of gaining a “dream job”, so be it. Change can happen, but it occurs from the inside and that’s hard to do if your name hurts your chance of even getting in. @Kim I think you are bringing an honest perspective to this question. Thanks for the articles. Gen Y’s view on the race issue is a grave improvement then previous generations but the world we live in is not solely Gen Y. Institutional racism still exists and at the end of the day in order to have a chance at success you must know the rules of engagement; which might be being Roger instead of Rahj. @ Sean That is the world we are striving to live in.
