Adam Toren Choosing whether to stay in what you may consider the comfort and safety of your current job or to venture out on your own can often be a very difficult decision to make. Before you hand your boss a letter of resignation, it’s important to determine whether you’re truly feeling an entrepreneurial impulse, or if you’re simply sick of the way things currently are and grasping for a change. http://smallbusinessbigvision.com/are-you-serious-about-becoming-an-entr...

Emily Moore Do you think it's possible to go straight from graduation into a career of freelance? Do I need to get into a 9-5 profession? I'm working on establishing myself now so that I'm already comfortable and in my "career track" when I graduate next May. What are your tips and advice for going down this road?

I know I'm late to the game, but I thought I'd chime in, too. You mention that you're working on establishing yourself now, so that you're ready to go by the time you graduate. I'm wondering what this entails.

The thing about freelance is that you don't have to wait for that degree. You can just dive in now, and perhaps build up a strong client base that's already there by the time you graduate. How? Start pitching stories and building up a collection of clips. Build a professional site in order to showcase these clips. Become active on social media, so that you can both promote your work and connect with others in the industry. Network like hell.

Of course, there are a few things to consider before going all or nothing:

- Do you have enough money saved up to handle monthly expenses in the event you don't reach your income goals?
- Have you budgeted for health insurance? (I can't remember when graduates go off their parents' insurance...)
- What sets you apart from other writers? Sometimes, taking on other jobs can enrich your writing, and add to your areas of expertise.
- Also, Tia's right. Former employers can often end up as eventual clients!
- Finally, full-time freelance writing can be done, but diversifying can provide you with more stability. Perhaps you could supplement your freelance work with a part-time job. Or provide other freelance services, like copy editing or corporate copywriting. Etc.

God, it's like I'm writing a novel. I hope this helps!

I think the phrase "above and beyond" is born because the bar is set too low. Art is the act of performing to your full potential. Ideally, that should be the status quo or the norm. It shouldn't be above and beyond. The flight attendant should do everything in their power to help the customer, not because they are being EXTRA helpful, but because it is the average expected behavior (maybe a little utopian in an industrialized society, but that is the goal, right?)

I agree that the word entrepreneur sounds like a special breed of people, and it is. But not because some people have certain qualities, and some people don't. Rather, it is because some people have the courage to recognize their entrepreneurial spirit and live to their full potential, and some people don't. Seth Godin calls it shutting down the lizard brain that keeps us from shipping. Abraham Maslow would have said that it's less a decision and more a progression into full potential life. Either way, it is available (theoretically) to everyone.

Execution is the ugly duckling sister of entrepreneurship. Looks daunting, but when you give it a chance, it is beautiful. I didn't really address execution in the blog post, but you are right, it is just as important as thinking independently.

Seth's definition of "Art" is the ability to move others with your work. For example, instead of just selling someone your used car, you also detail it, give it an oil change and a full tank of gas. The cost is very little to you, and you didn't have to it, but you know that the buyer will be overly appreciative. That's the art - going that one step further in the work place, or anywhere for that matter.

You're correct on entrepreneurs not having special qualities - thats what I meant by them not being a special breed. There have been plenty of studies researching psychological profiles of entrepreneurs and the only thing they have in common is that they have nothing in common. They dont have to be risk takers, or Type A personalities, or from affluent backgrounds, or even very charismatic people. You're right though - anyone looking to create a start-up needs to have the belief that they can do it.

Give this article a check - think you might find it interesting:

Unlike the Inc. 500/5000, this list isn't based on revenue growth, so the selection process is much more subjective. Of course, we include some predictable candidates, like Posterous and Foursquare, for obvious reasons. But you'll notice that we also choose people you might not expect on the list -- like choosing the smaller Living Social over the much larger Groupon. We like scrappy Upstarts! Pickle maker McClures and CityCraft, a sewing shop, are also favorites of mine because you typically don't see companies like that on most lists. We work hard to find great companies in a variety of industries. As for my day, Mike, it is never the same but always fun!
