Meghan Skiff Many of the yoga studios in the Pittsburgh region are switching to the donations only method of collecting payment for their services. This makes me curious. Are yoga studios more/less profitable with this structure? Does anyone have any perspective, experience, or research on this?

Hi Kim,
Since "Yoga" practice and teachers talk about love, compassion and union with oneself and the world, it is a bit tricky to do so while asking people to foot out $15-$20/class. I have some friends who own Yoga studios and there isn't much money anymore as they are competing either with other Yoga studios or with Gyms. When talking to them, I found out that they make most of their money from Training and selling products on the side.
Now regarding the donation, there are 2 sides to it. From the studio side, it allows more people to come in, then it is a numbers game (5 people paying $15/each Vs 10 people paying average of $10) and it also boosts the Studio's reputation as good doer.
From the students side, most people who seriously practice Yoga tend to be magnanimous. Therefore in addition to a great practice, it feels good to donate money and being generous versus being locked into a contract/card/monthly payment.
So I say it is a great structure.

Ryan Paugh After talking to you guys yesterday about my post-yoga lethargy I went to a morning class today. It was TOTALLY different. The sequences were pretty similar but I've had a lot of energy today. Maybe it's just the time of day that's making me tired...what do you all think?

It clears my head of everything that I may have thought about during the night and gets me ready to start my day.

@Meghan -I'm jealous! I have always wanted to take those early morning classes but can't because of my kids. I do a video early morning before everyone gets up and agree it's a great way to start the day!

If I do yoga first thing in the AM, I'm awake and ready to take on the world, and doing it during my lunch hour helps me get through the rest of the day. My night classes, however, really help me wind down and prepare for relaxation and sleep, and my sleep is almost always more restful after a night class.

Ryan Paugh I always feel really lethargic the morning after a Yoga session. Is this normal? Maybe it's just me, but it's a different kind of lethargy than after lifting weights, running or cycling.

I find that I'm normally more energetic afterwards...although I can feel a little bit sore or still the day after. But - and I know this sounds counter-intuitive - the best way to work out stiffenss or kinks is to go back to the studio! In all seriousness, perhaps you are not hydrating or eating enough? Is that possible?

Lindy Gulanes 30 Days of Yoga: A month = about how long it takes to make and break habits. Starting Saturday morning, I will be attempting to practice all or most of the Ashtanga primary series every morning starting at 6am. 3 days a week I will be going to my usual studio where a group of us will practice Mysore style together. I have a regular personal practice, but I think it will be beneficial to challenge myself, and to be held accountable by my peers.

Ryan Paugh Hey everybody. I'm new to Yoga. I'm going once a week, but I'd like to go more. It's addicting! Question for the Yoga pros: Is there such a thing as doing too much Yoga in one week?

It's an incredible way to start the day and even in a short 15min time span you can do so much. I also end my day w/ at least 30-40min before I go to bed. I don't have the time to go to classes without it cutting into my 'family time', so I found a good DVD that allows me to pick out 'timed' routines so depending on how much time I have each day I pop it in and I'm good to go!

Keely Myres Hey all, I started this new fitness project to get myself as close to my old gymnast body as I can. Yoga is a big part of my exercise routine (the only part I've been able to keep going actually) and I'm hoping to regain a lot of my flexibility through yoga. I'm blogging about it as I go and I'd love to hear your tips and opinions! http://www.theexgymnastbody.wordpress.com. Thanks!

Lindy Gulanes: Kirstin, for relaxation i would try a restorative hatha class, that focuses on gentle poses. Ryan, Let us know how your first class goes!

Claire Veuthey: I'd recommend vinyasa as it's a bit more athletic than hatha. But as said, try different classes/teachers to see what works for you. Enjoy!
