Jenn Pedde Did you all know that November is "National Novel Writing Month?" Or on twitter known as #NaNoWriMo? Basically you're supposed to set goals and write a full novel in the month of November through self discipline and the help of others doing it too. My company, Eat Your Serial, would love to be a place for anyone who is trying to accomplish this goal to publish their work - for free. We even set you up with an editor. Check out the blog for more about us: http://eatyourserial.wordpress.com

Patrick Atwater Does anyone have any thoughts / experience with innovative ways to do affiliate programing with a self published work? My book, A New California Dream (http://www.patrickatwater.com/p/my-book.html) is coming out in September and I want to figure out a way to leverage my connections in the nonprofit world. I'm planning to do speaking events where I'd donate the revenue to some of the nonprofit orgs that fit with the books vision. What sort of online model do people think would work well here?

JenG I have a guest post at Copyblogger that uses an example from the world of science to explain why we need to be writing what needs to be said, not just what readers want to hear (and what will ultimately spike your traffic). If you're a blogger or author, what do you think? Are you willing to "fight the lonely fight"? Gutsy Writer Is anyone here in the querying agents stage? Finished a memoir, pitched to agents at the San Diego State University conference and am procrastinating or shall we say "self-sabotaging" by not getting the book proposal done. My 84,000 word manuscript has been professionally edited, so what's the problem?

I've been attending conferences and volunteer at two writers' groups where I network with published and best-selling authors, so I understand the business. Fortunately I give presentations on how to build your author platform, which many writers start too late. Seth Godin states you need to start at least 3 years before your book comes out. Kathy you're right: a memoir is different. You need the finished manuscript, but also a marketing plan. That's what I've been procrastinating writing, despite having so many files with notes. Kathy, what is your book about? You said you have an agent. What stage are you at? Thanks for your comments.

Now....what up with you procrastinating what you TEACH to others?!? Get on it! You are so far ahead of most simply because you understand what is needed. Again, can't wait to read what will surely be a bestseller.

I'm working with the Dijkstra Agency. I'm told there are several editors 'interested' but the final proposal hasn't been sent out to bid yet. Apparently my agent has another soft biz book out now and the editors are all asking for 3 chpaters. So they are asking me to write 2 more chapters before the formal pitch. Now I'm the one procrastinating! Sat on this request for a whole week. Of course as part of the proposal all chapters are outlined and researched, so I have no idea why I'm not cranking it out. But this is the week! MUST. FINISH. CHAPTERS!

sunnyboy0 Hi, I wrote a book already and published as ebook and kindle. That was the easy part. Now I try to publish as print on demand. But I have problems with the book cover, I used bookcoverpro to create ist, but the cover was refused by the publisher because of transparencies and shadows. I found out already that I have to flatten the book cover pdf. One way is by making a screenshot. But what I don´t know is how to get the screenshot back to its original size. Any help? Thanks

Dan Canedo What are the best and most reputable instructional/how-to books to read before getting ready to write your own book? For example, screenwriters have some go-to books like Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder and Story by Robert McKee which are widely recommended in the industry for aspiring writers. Does it depend on type of book (fiction, non-fiction, sci-fi)? Thanks everyone.

Jens H. Altmann Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jens Altmann, and I'm a German writer/translator for the languages German, English and Japanese. I mostly write my novels in English. A major portion of the books published in Germany are translations from the US and the UK, so since I have to compete with you guys anyway, I figured I might just as well challenge you on your home turf. :) My non-fiction (articles, columns) is almost only for German publications, though.

Riley Carson I've written a short (fiction) story. I'm now looking for two things: A literary agent that will take on an unpublished writer, and/or a writer's workshop that will help me develop my craft. Ryan Paugh I just read a blog post from our friend Alexandra Levit (http://bit.ly/aNLDMx) about what it means to be a best-selling author and it got me thinking about all of you who are passionate about writing. If you're interested in writing a book, or any piece of writing for that matter, what's more important to you: acclaim or meaning? Just because a book is a best seller doesn't mean it's any good. If you could only have one of the two, which would you choose? Money or impact?

The following comes from the perspective of someone who hasn't yet made money from writing.

I think that the web has made this extra interesting and ambiguous. All writing is, in a way, designed to provoke some sort of conversation. The web, though, is extra-conversational. Most writing on the web is designed to provoke immediate feedback, and we've discovered that that is best accomplished by short and open-ended posts.
On the other hand, a lot of meaningful writing takes a long time to sink in and doesn't necessarily provoke a direct response. I think that it's important to separate these two types of writing. If you're making money for it and it's on the web, chances are that you are good at provoking instant feedback.
I may be going out on a limb here, but I think this is an interesting subject:
Which is more satisfying, writing something that will slowly sink in with people but not provoke instant feedback, or writing something that provokes instant feedback?
