If I could change anything, I wouldn't have been a smartass and told him he looked like Bob Sagit - he gets it all the time and he is not amused by it. I'm gonna have something redeemingly smart to say next time I meet him.

The group will identify top online and tech trends and will collaborate to create blog posts on the subjects. Without exception, someone, somewhere in the world would always have the right answer & offer a detailed & accurate response. I always thought that this process would be a great way to identify talent. Now, social media is making the identification of people based on their ideas a reality: http://bit.ly/cKq8jR

The key is experience and earning the right to participate. Gen-Y is in a rush, and feel entitled to be invited to the table and share their opinions when there is no experience to back their assumptions. Gen-Y are educated, and opinionated. So was when I was in my 20tys, but what sets Gen-Y apart from Gen-X is we had no expectation of being herd until we had earned the right to be heard. True some Gen-X got impatient and they broke out on their own to blaze their own trails, but for the most part we paid our dues.

One of the first things I was told out of University by my first supervisor was… You know nothing, if you knew you knew nothing that would be something.

Looking back, those words stung, and at the time I disagreed with every fibre that composed my 20ty nothing existence... looking back, he was right. I had so much more to learn.

I like the fact Gen Y has very little patience and is highly educated. My biggest concern is how do you meld the best of Gen X and Gen Y. If you do that you get a very powerful social network that will rival anything else in the world.

What does this network look like? I don't have the slightest idea but it will be absolutely earthshaking. The qualities of this network that it will be dynamic, creative and resilient. It will have the best qualities of Gen X and Gen Y.

But I must demur from the accepted, conventional wisdom of "common sense." Does it mean the same thing when said by Sarah Palin as by President Obama? I've never forgotten, and have handy, my first college writing text, The Elements of Rhetoric by the incomparable Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, in which he cites "common sense" as one of the impediments to sound reasoning: "What is called common sense may be common error or common ignorance...At one time it was common sense that the world was a several thousand-year-old square body that served as the center of the solar system." Another problem I have with Rainey's reasoning is his predication that bad judgment is 100% bad. Nothing's that perfect, even egregiousness. Full disclosure: I've been accused of having "no common sense." I leave you with a G.K. Chesterton quote, also courtesy Professor Ruggiero: "It is not the wild ideals that wreck the world; it is the tame ideals." And Ryan, if it can't be learned, how exactly is it acquired? I'd offer it can be, but needs definition. I'd be happy to help define "common sense" in a Brazen context. Speaking up when you think you have a better idea has to be part of it.

As for the small company I work for, they do not participate in social media outlets.

It also depends on what your goals are (awareness, sales, recruiting, etc.). However, as television viewership and print media circulation continue to plummet, Social Media, with its unprecedented growth over the last 36 months, appears to be here to stay as a critical if not core part of any company's (large or small) marketing/sales efforts.

Some people get the bug early in life & others grow into it or are exposed to the "right" opportunity or environment later in life. The article's conclusion is dead on: VCs have a certain stereotype of an Entrepreneur that they filter for. Based on the research data presented, these VCs are missing a big segment of entrepreneurs. What do you think?
