Cheryl Lynn Morris Back in the late 70s/early 80s, I read in Psychology Today about Dr. Ira Progoff's Intensive Journal technique for accessing and managing your attitudes and beliefs in your subconscious mind. I learned from the examples in the article, and was able to extinguish a bad habit that was alarming me. I've signed up to take the 3-hour Introductory Presentation in Ellicott City, Maryland on June 3, 2012. Jason H. Parker I've been thinking lately about the importance of building social capital, or essentially, positioning oneself as a central node in a network of interconnected relationships. What do you do in your professional life to build social capital? What tools/tips/questions have you found to be effective for you in building these quality relationships?

Personally I call myself a connector whilst I'm working with Enspiral - I connect people, places, things, ideas and locations to make things happen. I think the important thing is listening - without that you can't really be that connector.
Enspiral itself is all about building social capital in the sense of social enterprise - supporting purpose over profit. We focus our talents & skills on great projects/relationships with NGO's & Social Enterprises.... we're kind of a social enterprise FOR social enterprises you could say.

I also co-host a series of workshops which supports idea innovation & project incubation for social innovators in Wellington, NZ - where I now call my hometown.

So in essence - listening & analysis helps build networks and pro-activity/action helps build social capital I guess?

I once had an admin who was really mean to me until I went and checked out one of her plays (it wasn't a political move, I really wanted to see the play). The other thing I do is find opportunities to be with people in non-work settings. Going to a conference and then hitting the dance floor, always seems to change the dynamics of the relationship.

Kinda hard to do from home, especially when a lot depends on the high-end hardware and software that never leaves the facility, not to mention the 10Gbit network throughout the facility. Remote connections suck, especially with the security involved and the narrowness of the bandwidth pipe.

TOP IDEA: Ty Unglebower Today I am beginning the process of unfollowing, and unsubscribing, and just plain giving up on some of the "must follow!" gurus, blogs, Twitter feeds and websites I sort of fell for in 2010. Actually I didn't totally fall for all of them, but I was acting on the water cooler premise that if I read what everyone else read, I'd have more to talk about and hence more to network about. But it was inauthentic. I'm tired. No more "Godin-like" sites for me without some unique appeal.

This is particularly a problem with Twitter...before you know it you're following way too many people (especially the "gurus") and absorbing absolutely nothing in terms of content that is sincerely relevant to you. I only follow a few people that I find interesting and in line with what I want to learn/know. Sure, my follow back numbers suffer as a result, but I did not sign up to that SN for the popularity but rather the value.

TOP IDEA: Ty Unglebower Have you ever heard how excited some people get about "putting this place on the map"? Whether it be a city, a company, a college, or something else. How often are too many sacrifices to the character of the institution for the sake of greater fame? I say too many, too often. I'm not worried about being a part of something on the map. I want to be a part of something that offers a rewarding experience. I discuss this in my latest post. http://bit.ly/gaaGUJ

I went to a very small public high school with a music program that has a great reputation with the surrounding communities. Tell that to the administration though. We've had to fund the program independently for years now because the school refuses to fund the music program and other extracurriculars properly and instead puts everything into (big surprise!) the basketball team. I don't know what it is about being "put on the map," but it truly doesn't seem to be the best policy in all cases.

Thanks for your thoughts, both of you! (I just now got back onto to my BC account today after some difficulties.)

I like how you put it Jeremy. That the map destroys greatness. I think that sums up my view on the issue rather nicely.

TOP IDEA: Dan Canedo Hey everyone. I have a question about online job postings. I applied to a an online job posting, but now have updated info to add to it. Is it okay to submit an updated resume to an online job posting (of which you've previously posted a resume)? Will the additions to your accomplishments/experience matter to a recruiter for an job posted online? Will the re-submission cause confusion? Will it hurt your chances of getting selected for an interview or will it help? Thanks everyone!

I would suggest absolutely update your resume to the online job posting, even if you previously applied. Most recruiting systems have a date/time stamp on actions take in the system so the recruiter can use the most current resume. If given the option on the online posting, I would suggest deleting the older resume. Also, if invited to an interview always remember to bring an updated copy of your resume with you, even if the recruiter/hiring manager state they have a copy. This will ensure that the recruiter/hiring manager has the most current resume. Hope this helps!!!

Ty Unglebower Much is said here on Brazen and all of the other similar career oriented sites about risk taking. Getting out of one's comfort zone. I don't know if I agree with all of it, but I do know that certain types of risk taking, such as the flashy, jump off a cliff kind get more traction in the stories, blogs, and webinars. But there are quiet, subtle, risk taken by the introverted among us every day. I write about the overlooked risks of the introvert. http://bit.ly/qAaP3j

Ty Unglebower It is about time someone at least made a minimal effort to put an official (if not instantly effective) end to discrimination against the unemployed in the job search. It is not only disgusting and unfair, but also lazy. I have heard so much talk from hiring managers about "why see so many people we need to narrow it down somehow" that I wish all of them would become unemployed for 100 weeks to see just how this tactic feels from the other side. http://bit.ly/rqpC2i

I'm in that boat right now. I was laid off after my position was eliminated to save money and the duties were split between two other, more senior, employees.

And if a person is unemployed due to a reason directly related to their actions, a prospective employer should ask themselves if that reason is 1) relevant to their operation and 2)likely to happen again. If it is, THAT may be a valid reason to not hire a person...at which point it's not discrimination based on the actual unemployment.

Also, from the NELP report:
Significantly, the legislation does not make the unemployed a "protected class" under antidiscrimination laws. It is far more targeted, focusing solely on the process of recruiting and hiring,
and applies only to decisions that are based on individuals' employment status.
