Brad Hilderbrand I have an informal meeting with the dept head of my dream company coming up soon and I'm a bit nervous regarding what to talk about. Do I steer the conversation towards how the company does business and their best practices, or should I keep the conversation light and focus on shared interests and getting to know each other? Any suggestions/tips/advice?

Nicole Leffel If anyone is in the NYC area, you should stop by NYU to check out their 2nd Annual "No Quarter" exhibit of indie games. There are a handful of great games on display for the rest of the month, and it's an opportunity to check out the amazing NYU Game Center! - http://bit.ly/jKlgyy

Nicole Leffel So what does a Game Designer really do all day? - http://bit.ly/gTc5aA I've recently been hired as a full-time Game Designer for social games start-up in NYC, and for the past month I've been guest-blogging with the NYU Game Center about the experience of interning (and moving up) in the industry. I'd be happy to field any questions about the experience!

Nicole Leffel I'm a current Junior at NYU, and I'm really interested in getting into the game industry through a summer internship. The problem I've finding is that there aren't many big game studios -- which are more likely to have established internship programs -- located in NYC. Does anyone have any tips? I'd gladly put in some work at a start-up or a smaller company. Even when I've found companies, it's often a challenge to get the appropriate contact info.

I would imagine the best source for these contacts would be relevant forums such as TIGSource and FlashGameLicense

Thanks Charles!

I know what you mean about "going where the jobs are," and it's definitely something that has been in the back of my mind since I started becoming more serious about entering the games industry. However, since I won't be able to move for a while (still got another semester/year of college to take care of), I figured someplace small in NYC wouldn't be a bad start. I will definitely check out those forums/that link!

The reality is that a small percentage of people use Mac's compared to PC's.

I though Apple was moving towards removing barriers (from change in hardware). But they just seem to put up more barriers. On the other hand, many flash games wouldn't work correctly with their touch screen as many require a keyboard to play the game...I feel Apple is being really anti social with other technologies unless you are writing with their SDK...reminds me of their first commercial, reversed http://bit.ly/JGmTW

Rachel Vincent Hey all. Don't know if any of you are interested or know someone who is interested, but, for the third year in a row, Sony Online Entertainment is offering one female student a scholarship this year to look into the gaming industry as a career. The goal is to encourage more women to get involved in game production and design. It's pretty awesome: a $10,000 scholarship and a 10-week internship with Sony Online Entertainment studios.

You can be going to school pretty much anywhere, but you have to be a legal resident of the US and in an undergraduate program related to video games (like design, animation, programming or visual effects, as examples). The internship is done at one of the Sony studios, which are in San Fran, Austin, Seattle, and Denver.

I tend to appreciate the ability of computers (and in this case, video games) to carry and create culture. It seems that some argue for a utopia where individuals have the autonomy to design tools individually. I tend to disagree as this view often seems to ignore sociality as facilitated by computers as an important part of culture production.

I also feel as if this view often ignores the capabilities of a less technical populace. Being creative enough to generate truly novel content requires both creative and technical mastery that many my not possess. I'm excited that individuals are finally given the opportunity to become anything more than passive consumers of the media they interact with. Moreover, I respect the viewpoints of those who worry about how content generators are rewarded, even if I disagree.

Destinie Carbone Well the initial concept was that the boxes were mostly design elements. When clicking the boxes again the thumbnails do disappear. As far as the gallery goes, I'm not trying to market myself as a video game concept artist ATM, I am focusing more on comics and design. Thanks for your input, Charles, it's much appreciated.

You'll want to get as close as you can to the quality of people already working in the position you want if you really want a good chance. Also, since other places aren't helping, a bit of feedback on your portfolio site for whatever it's worth (not an artist, grains of salt and such).

Also, your thumbnails seem quite small. I would maybe have your best few pieces loaded by default, maybe not big enough to require scrolling, but in much bigger thumbs.

Chris(tina) Brady Hey there. Long-time writer/gamer, trying to crack into the gaming journalism field. Limited success so far with a couple of gaming blogs and a near-miss with a major site, but I'm not giving up! If anyone is working on developing a game, and needs assistance with characterization or story arc, let me know. It's definitely up my alley since I majored in creative writing. Aside from that, I always welcome new journalism opportunities!
