Dan Corbett Tips for MBA Success I recently completed my MBA at the University of Colorado - Boulder and have been looking back at my notes from the effort. While the courses have decidedly improved my knowledge base, perhaps the most important lessons occurred supplementary to the classroom. Post #1: Team Building, Performance, and Leadership http://www.dancorbett.net/2010/07/13/mba-lessons-1-team-building-perform...

In teams, the most important thing is to determine motives of the "shareholders" (teamates)before starting. My best team experience have been aligned by their expectations especially when they are letter grades.

By asking expectations and what teamates want out of the team, what they want to learn, etc, you will be more likely to engage everyones interests when breaking up tasks.

In many situations it also will make sense to elect a leader but don't forget to assign responsibilities to the position. Get your teamates buy-in because in some cases the leaders opinion may be used as a tie-breaker but it should be previously agreed upon.

Lastly, decide on a method for communication. I'm a distance student, so my teams have to decide on how we'll communicate. Typically this involves scheduled meetings a week in advance, skype for communication during meetings, and some sort of file sharing webapp so we can share docs throughout the project. We've used google docs for this.

Devin Chasanoff My start-up went belly up, but I've got a fire burning to do great things now more than ever! Trying to get an entry-level VC position in NYC or a position at a growing tech company where I can take some serious responsibility employing my skills in strategy, finance, and marketing. Any and all help would be enormously appreciated!!!

Devin Chasanoff Anyone know of any upcoming networking events for entrepreneurs and/or VCs (especially in the web field)? I'm looking to learn more about the whole start-up and funding process, and all of my friends and family are sick of listening to me talk about my start-up.

Randy Domolky I need your help! We are considering an investment in HitFix. They are an entertainment content web site. Are you able give it a quick look and let me know what you think of their presentation and content? I have developed a short 60 second survey that will help us with our due diligence. Would you be able to take the survey? Pls spend 60 seconds on the web site at www.hitfix.com and then link to the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/GTMTWM2. Your answers are completely confidential. Thanks!

Ed Barrientos Don Rainey is right:The must-have attribute of start up employees is common sense http://bit.ly/aECUfD This applies to VCs/Angels as well!

Ryan Healy: Very true! Common sense is your best weapon when faced with a situation you've never encountered before. You can't learn common sense.

But I must demur from the accepted, conventional wisdom of "common sense." Does it mean the same thing when said by Sarah Palin as by President Obama? I've never forgotten, and have handy, my first college writing text, The Elements of Rhetoric by the incomparable Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, in which he cites "common sense" as one of the impediments to sound reasoning: "What is called common sense may be common error or common ignorance...At one time it was common sense that the world was a several thousand-year-old square body that served as the center of the solar system." Another problem I have with Rainey's reasoning is his predication that bad judgment is 100% bad. Nothing's that perfect, even egregiousness. Full disclosure: I've been accused of having "no common sense." I leave you with a G.K. Chesterton quote, also courtesy Professor Ruggiero: "It is not the wild ideals that wreck the world; it is the tame ideals." And Ryan, if it can't be learned, how exactly is it acquired? I'd offer it can be, but needs definition. I'd be happy to help define "common sense" in a Brazen context. Speaking up when you think you have a better idea has to be part of it.

I think everyone would love to see a correlation between effort put into social media outlets vs revenue.
As for the small company I work for, they do not participate in social media outlets.
Friends I know that have their own small business rely on Facebook and Linkden to generate new business by show casing their products. I have to say, it appears to be very helpful in doing - I can see comparing it to a cheap mans commercial on a slow cable channel.

It also depends on what your goals are (awareness, sales, recruiting, etc.). However, as television viewership and print media circulation continue to plummet, Social Media, with its unprecedented growth over the last 36 months, appears to be here to stay as a critical if not core part of any company's (large or small) marketing/sales efforts.

Ed Barrientos Fantastic article on the long running debate of whether Entrepreneurs are born or made: http://tcrn.ch/b60AWW I have always believed it's both. Some people get the bug early in life & others grow into it or are exposed to the "right" opportunity or environment later in life. The article's conclusion is dead on: VCs have a certain stereotype of an Entrepreneur that they filter for. Based on the research data presented, these VCs are missing a big segment of entrepreneurs. What do you think?

Even if you were born with the entrepreneurial spirit doesn't mean you will pursue that path. It has to be nurtured.

Dan Corbett Hi Randy, Out of curiosity, what is your opinion on Venture Capital courses with a MBA program. This coming semester, I am scheduled take one (focuses on VC from the entrepreneurs perspective). I've had some interesting conversations with my classmates but am interested in the opinion from someone within the industry. Cheers, Dan
