I am quickly finding that creating and populating lists, private and public, is the most fun aspect of Twitter for me. I have more on lists than I am following right now.

I have some solid rules about who to list, and who to follow. But other accounts sort of fall in the middle.

Usually people who tweet a thousand times an hour get listed, so they don't clog my feed. I follow people I feel I have a chance of actually talking to.

How do all of you decide if you follow or if you list?

I use a "locked list" to follow other resume writers and am building a career-focused one for my (very few, as i just started) followers. I start following one guy who posts jobs but he was like a spigot you couldn't turn off...unfollowed him as he, like you said, clogged my feed.

I, too, want to have more of a relationship of sorts with my twitter business community. (ok, I do follow @shitmydadsays who doesn't have a thing to do with business but is funnier than shit)

Everyone I follow is on a list. And in Tweetdeck I pay attention to some lists more than others. the generic "followback" list. If after a certain period of time, I don't recognize a username, i'll usually unfollow, because it means i never read their tweets anyway, or tried to connect in other places.

I don't know what all of the abbreviations are for, since I refuse to use them. Secondly, with everyone posting links and retweets, (and rerererereretweets) I admit I am finding it hard to have any conversation, or pick up any useful information, or network with anybody, via the feed. It all does seem like noise, as I had feared, and I am only following 12 people so far.

While there is some threading capabilities, Twitter is not really designed to support a full-fledged conversation (although perhaps some of the third party apps may display them better). While I happen to be a fan of FriendFeed, there are a number of applications which lend themselves to conversations.

To express ideas concisely (but still correctly!) is a valuable skill, and the character limit challenges me to cut extraneous words while maintaining some semblance of style. It's helped me in my writing online and off.

But I realize I am probably in the minority on this one.

I just wanted to share one of the cooler things that has happened during my short Twitter career so far.

The other day was "Follow the Arts Day", and all were encouraged to follow a new arts group, as well as encourage followers to do so. I made mention of the Folger Library in one of my many posts that day calling for new followers. Later that day the Folger Library tweeted a personal thank you to me. Not much to some, but Folger is a pretty big deal to art types like myself.

Does anyone have tips on successfully taking a break from social media?

This question sounds strange, but I find that the only way I can limit my interaction with others in the online world is to simply go to a location where I cannot get Internet.

I tend to have e-mail, RSS, and Twitter applications running whenever I'm at my computer, and seeing icons with numbers or notification overlays everywhere was a bit distracting. So I turned them all off. It's not really a break from social media, but at least I'm not constantly reminded that I'm connected - letting me get other work done online but still allowing me to switch gears if I want to.

Without exception, someone, somewhere in the world would always have the right answer & offer a detailed & accurate response. The key is experience and earning the right to participate. Gen-Y is in a rush, and feel entitled to be invited to the table and share their opinions when there is no experience to back their assumptions. Gen-Y are educated, and opinionated. So was when I was in my 20tys, but what sets Gen-Y apart from Gen-X is we had no expectation of being herd until we had earned the right to be heard. True some Gen-X got impatient and they broke out on their own to blaze their own trails, but for the most part we paid our dues.

One of the first things I was told out of University by my first supervisor was… You know nothing, if you knew you knew nothing that would be something.

Looking back, those words stung, and at the time I disagreed with every fibre that composed my 20ty nothing existence... looking back, he was right. I had so much more to learn.

I like the fact Gen Y has very little patience and is highly educated. My biggest concern is how do you meld the best of Gen X and Gen Y. If you do that you get a very powerful social network that will rival anything else in the world.

What does this network look like? I don't have the slightest idea but it will be absolutely earthshaking. The qualities of this network that it will be dynamic, creative and resilient. It will have the best qualities of Gen X and Gen Y.

I have a personal twitter account, http://www.twitter.com/kristil, where I also post for my professional group. What do you think about separate accounts for personal and prof? I don't think it's necessary, except for news orgs. For friends, I end up following both and getting duplicate tweets. First, what if someone else needs to take over the tweeting for your professional group? Everyone who follows your professional group will need to start following the other person, and you may lose followers. Second, I follow the tweets to find out what my professional org is doing, not what she is doing. You may turn off some followers who are only interested in the professional group. Plus, I agree with Eoghann Irving that some stuff for your friends would not be appropriate for the other group, and you may not want to self-censor that much.

I guess my philosophy is that I won't be having certain conversations online under any guise. Twitter is a certain audience and purpose for me--making friends with technical communicators and the people that hire them. And Tampa Bay bloggers. :) That means I reveal some personal things, but I mostly avoid religion and politics unless I'm tweeting a resource or expressing about my day. This is just like work, I think. Facebook is a bit more revealing as far as my opinions and whatnot, but there's family and close colleagues there, and if anyone cared enough to dig dirt they could find me there. So I'm not going to get "ugly" online anywhere. Who wants to be ugly anywhere? I'm going to be myself everywhere. I don't have time to worry that "myself" is not ok with someone. I don't want to deal with that someone, anyway. I don't disparagingly of my employer or organization or give away proprietary info ANYWHERE--that's not in MY best interest.
By having one account, I am avoiding overhead and maximizing the benefit of making authentic, transparent connections. The fact is, I'm deeply involved in our organization, and if you don't like me, it's not going to be fun to connect with us.
That's a good point about when someone else takes over. I'll direct followers to that person and remain a champion for the organization. For now, I don't think that challenge outweighs the benefits of keeping one account.

I see the practicality of that, (because some of the institutional Twitter accounts posts hundreds of Tweets in a few hours. That would render my feed impractical if I followed them directly.)
