Adrianne Burke Hi Everyone! I just started working at a new company, and they currently do not subscribe to a media contacts database. At my previous job I used CisionPoint, but I was wondering if you could recommend some other databases. I'm familiar with Vocus, MyMediaInfo, and Burrelles Luce in addition to Cision but have never used these. Anybody have experience with these? Anybody recommend any different sites?

Rebecca Thorman How does social media affect trust between PR and journalists? A friend of mine is doing a study on it and asked me to spread the word. If you're a PR person or journalist, take her survey! Here is a short link to my friend's blog post sharing info about the study: http://bit.ly/studysm and here are the links to the actual surveys - For Public Relations Practitioners: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/surveypr For Journalists: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/surveyjourn

Ryan Paugh I don't consider myself to be a Journalist although I did go to school to be one. I graduated from Penn State with a degree in Journalism, but ended up working in the world of Corporate Communications then moved onto my Community Director job at Brazen. Even though I didn't end up being a Journalist I still think my major prepared me for a lot of challenges I face as a communicator. Anyone else graduate with a Journalism degree but not become a Journalist? Did it still help your career?

OK so I don't regret that I had to take pilates to graduate BUT I agree with you that some other areas could have helped me out in my career :)

I graduated with a degree in English/Creative Writing which was heavily weighted in preparing you for the world with many skill sets. While I have dabbled in writing and been had published works over the years, I have never had regrets over my degree choice. I think a degree in english, writing or journalism can prepare you for almost anything!

Ryan Paugh What's the most important part of sending out a Press Release? Is it the messaging? Seeding it with different media outlets? How do you make sure that you have a successful release? I hate doing Press Releases .... Do any of you at major news outlets even read them anymore?

The photo.

If you can have a professionally done photo that dramatically demonstrates the advantage a product provides or illustrates the message you're trying to communicate you'll have a much better opportunity of getting press.

Think of yourself as the editor of the publication. You want to have an attractive product that your readers will be excited about. If you have a press release that is relevant to your publications audience accompanied with a great photo you will be more likely to publish the press release with a prominent position.

Don't skip or skimp on the photograph.

Ryan Paugh One of our Brazen Interns just asked me a series of questions about Ethics for one of his Journalism classes. Do you think that Social Media is redefining Journalism Ethics? I was a little stumped by this question. I think that the major rules still apply, but there are a lot of new grey areas. For instance, is reporting something that you heard on Twitter ethical? How do you know that what people are tweeting is true?

I also would add that I think everything out there is fodder for journalists -- it just needs to be handled wisely by trying to verify and qualifying. If you think a tweet is relevant to a story, you need to say it was in a tweet and let the public do its job of deciding what that information is worth, similar to how you should say whether someone wrote something or said something. No I don't think we should rely on Twitter solely for anything, but we should include it either in our background research or as one of many sources in a story where it is relevant. I believe ignoring social media altogether might be more irresponsible than using it!

Finding something out on twitter is great, but then the news needs to be verified via other means (ie. you don't want to say two people said xyz because person 2 may have just RTed person 1).

Ryan Paugh I just read in Fast Company that 52% of surveyed bloggers consider themselves to be Journalists (http://bit.ly/au0l4G). What do you guys think about this? I think that it's scary!

A lot of people would probably flock to shaky sources even if they knew they were shaky, so long as they fit their point of view.

I'd like to see more traditional journalists take on the role of curators, pointing Web visitors to sites they've deemed reliable and trustworthy (of course, we have to get them over the whole linking out thing first).

Ellie Behling: @paul I couldn't agree with you more about curation. I think that's really the new role of the trained journo. Great convo today!

: So how will we know the amateurs when (if) we do see them? What's the platform for their finished works?

: Nobody said systemic transitions have to be smooth, after all.

Stephanie Chaptal Dugué No comments, no events, no discussion, is the future of journalism is "no future" ?

127 weeks ago from The Future of Journalism

: So far, the future of journalism is telling everyone else why their ideas about the future of journalism wont work. Got a fix for that?
