I would also highly discourage you from offering your services for free.

Instead, how about a free trial? Sign a contract to work with me for three months, if after the first month you're not the right fit for them, you both can part ways without cost to your client.

Negotiate something else other than monetary compensation, aka, bartering. Maybe you're willing to do a small project for a particular client because they are well connected, for example. Can they get you in front of potential future clients. I wouldn't do it on a hope and a prayer though. Make some at least quasi-concrete arrangement to extract those connections in a meaningful way in exchange for work. There are a host of options here. I've worked with a client who had a beach house and I got that for a week instead of cash.

Finally, why not volunteer your talents? I think there is an important distinction between volunteering and giving away your services to a client. They both build your body of work but the latter comes with all of the problems that Seth noted. I'll add lousy referrals to that list too. You might get referred but more in the sense that you can hire this guy for cheap. Not the best referral!

On the other hand, if you're volunteering for a nonprofit, for example, you might still get a referral but there is an understanding that the reason why you're giving away your services is because of the cause not because you're time is cheap.

I met all the short term goals I set up for myself, but in the end I was not accepted. How do you handle with defeat? What are some steps to keep your positive attitude? Jamie Nacht Farrell People always ask, "what can I do to stand out in an interview?" and having interviewed 1000s - I believe there is only ONE thing that sets people apart and it's not something you can FAKE; PASSION / Hunger sets people apart. It's something a good manager can sense in their gut. Passion drives everything else; persistence, ambition, tenacity, etc. Can you guys think of anything else that helps one stand apart???? Do you believe passion is the biggest factor in success? http://bit.ly/f6Dxj4

Passion is the only thing that sets people apart from real enthusiasm to "looking for work". And the winners in this world have passion and you can see that and identify it. BRAVO. Well done. The faster someone lets you know their passion the less BS you have to deal with the faster you will find a terrific candidate to work for your company.

Passion is the only thing that is worthy to the interviewer or ee. Wake up and smell the coffee people. Get real.

I tend to agree with Cheryl.

I personally have seen some fairly incompetent, yet very passionate people. Passion is overrated. It has become the buzz word, and I'm sorry i don't really buy it. I think that one must have innumerable other qualities in order for passion to count. When all those other qualities are in place, starting with a stellar work ethic and a core knowledge base and applicable experience, then yes passion will make a difference. Your best writers are not always the most passionate, but are usually the ones who are most organized and have the stellar work ethic, and I believe you will find this in most professions, even among the creatives.

TOP IDEA: Jamie Nacht Farrell I contend the definition of "career" as we've been taught is out dated. How would you define, "career" now days? people are "seeking" the wrong thing. People should NOT seek out a traditional career, but rather always be looking for "the next adventure". I wrote a post about how we can redefine what we look for to better our futures...and how that may or may not be a "traditional career". How do we get rid of that "preconceived" stigma attached to career? http://t.co/sLvOA8l

From a recruiting perspective, it definitely helps to find the time to talk about possibilities. Unless I and my candidates have really spent the time together to establish what they can and want to do, it would be tough to make this a relationship. I do take them when they are the actual recruiter or hiring manager. I ignore the rest. With the salary positions, I always take those calls because I've been able to refer them to contacts who would be interested.

I refuse calls from the rest when they use a call center or calling service. I will only talk to someone if they are actually from the company or high level. I just don't have time to deal with some 18 yrs old reading from a script.

It's pretty sad but a large private financial firm tried to recruit me last week and they used a calling service. I asked two questions and the caller said that I knew more about that firm than she does. All she had was 3 sentences and 15 questions to ask on a sheet. Needless to say, my view about the quality of management at that firm just went down the drain.

Interesting question, but as a creative recruiter and consultant, all of it is at play all the time, my social skills, my professional and technical skills, and my knowledge. I'm on the phone all day speaking to my clients or interviewing new candidates and I have to know everything that's going on in my industry, technically, design-wise, skill sets, job-wise, so that I can understand my clients' needs and evaluate my candidates' abilities, politely, diplomatically, knowledgeably with authority. I'm the expert or am viewed as such. So as Aurian states, there is no separation ever between them, at least for what I do.

TOP IDEA: Hannah Kane The craze in career advice is that the job market is all about job CREATION-- job postings are a thing of the past. Then why have my networking and info interview efforts led to dead ends, while responding to job postings have led to dozens of interviews and a job offer? Ryan Paugh I got engaged over the holidays after spending a lot of time waiting for the right moment. Afterward, I realized is that timing isn't everything. I should have proposed a long time ago, but I kept telling myself it had to be perfect. Perfection isn't just about timing. It's also about acting on opportunities to make your life happier. I think that's the same in our careers too. Spend less time waiting for the timing to be right and more time doing what you think will make you happy.

Ryan, Congratulations. Best wishes to the two of you.

I think timing matters some of the time when it involves needs but otherwise, it's a self inflicted thing we do. When to pop the question matters when one side is not ready to move on. When you're both on the same page, one day does not matter out of 70 years of sharing a life.
