A sustainable food system provides food perpetually and ensure the people, ecology and resources involved remain healthy and abundant. Americans waste more than 40 percent of the food we produce for consumption. That comes at an annual cost of more than $100 billion. At the same time, food prices and the number of Americans without enough to eat continues to rise. How crazy, nonsensical and inefficient is it that food travels all over the world only to wind up in the trash?! Think of how many resources (labor, water, transportation) go to waste. And think of the potential if they were saved and redistributed properly. We can do better. We have to do better. Reducing food waste is an important part of building a more sustainable food system.
