AmyPotthast Hey everyone, the summer Idealist Grad Fairs are coming up in LA, San Francisco, New York, Washington DC + Chicago in June: http://www.gradfairs.idealist.org — check out top public-interest grad schools from around the country. Free + open to the public - all take place in the evening so working professionals can participate.

Hannah Kane So how are you all paying for grad school? Some professions will pay for your grad school for you, but I am not among those lucky ones. To those who have graduate degrees already (and who potentially are drowning in loans), was it worth it?

Hannah Kane Now that I'm on winter break and have a little more time on my hands, I'm commencing a search for scholarships for the next school year. However, there seem to be so few scholarships for a masters level social work student!! Anyone have any recommendations on scholarships, or where to look for them?

Hannah Kane I'm running into some resistance at my internship for my MSW program-- I have a lot of cool ideas that I think would really enhance my role and the organization's work, but my supervisor never goes for my ideas, even though my current role leaves me with a lot of down time that I think I could fill with my projects. Should I just drop it? How could I implement my ideas without causing problems with my supervisor?

I run into this issue as a recent graduate who was an intern in the same department at the same company where I now work full-time. I think Kimberly has a great point, though. I'd focus on communicating that you need more x - challenging projects, exposure to improving process, etc - and ask in what ways your boss thinks you can get that experience. Let us know how your "negotiation" with him/her goes!

For example "Do you think XYZ might be a viable alternative?". Then be sure to ask why it will or will not work. Gets your ideas out there in a way that appears deferential to your superiors without sounding like you think you know more than they do.

Hannah Kane Wish I could make it too this, but since I can't I figured I'd share! The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) of DC is having a networking happy hour for young professionals involved in international development! If you're interested in international development, check it out! http://www.ynpn.org/s/936/Washington-2.aspx?sid=936&gid=5&pgid=1680&cid=...

Hannah Kane As a social work student, though this should apply to anyone, I need healthy ways to unwind at the end of a long day. For me, that's cooking all the way! There's nothing like a quiche to take my troubles away. What activities do you use to destress? Or do you even have any?

I'm a huge fan of rock climbing and kayaking, and since I don't have a car I'm walking all the time. I just can't afford to join a rock gym right now and the weather's becoming unfavorable for kayaking, so I'm trying to find something else more exciting than a treadmill!

(by the way, lol @ squirrels getting sassy!)

Jennifer Liu: I usually exercise, but sometimes after a stressful or terrible day, I tend towards shopping and listening to music.

Hannah Kane So the DREAM Act has stalled in the Senate. This feels like a major setback for those who have been advocating for this legislation for a long time now. How do you retreat and regroup after this kind of a setback? http://nyti.ms/9L0OEE

Also, as someone who's worked on equality issues, I've felt stinging defeat a whole lot. So, at least for me, I just try and channel what Teddy Kennedy would say: "The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die." You have to keep thinking of different strategies when the path we've gone down doesn't work.

It can just be hard to get back up on your feet and start a whole new campaign with whole new tactics. But after taking a couple of minutes to feel sorry for ourselves, we've got to brush off the defeat and get right back to it.

Hannah Kane Check out Favline- started by a friend of mine, it's an incredibly creative social company that sells eco-friendly products, invites you to share inspiring quotes (who doesn't love quotes), and picks 3 charities a year, on your recommendations, where they donate their proceeds! http://www.favline.com/

It seems like this is becoming the new trend to give part of the proceeds to charity that users/customers choose. I'd love to see more companies let users/customers get involved with actual products themselves - that would be quite neat as well!

Hannah Kane Akhila Kolisetty posted this on Brazen and I wanted to repost it here. It's a great blog post about the helping mentality, and how wanting to help people isn't really helping them at all. What do you think? Does this affect your work as social workers? http://bit.ly/aGSnr2
