I'm not a marketing person by trade, but would like to bounce ideas and figure out how to implement and execute social media marketing strategies for social enterprises and foundations. If anyone has any thoughts or would like to talk more, please let me know. thanks!

Without exception, someone, somewhere in the world would always have the right answer & offer a detailed & accurate response. I always thought that this process would be a great way to identify talent. Now, social media is making the identification of people based on their ideas a reality: http://bit.ly/cKq8jR

The key is experience and earning the right to participate. Gen-Y is in a rush, and feel entitled to be invited to the table and share their opinions when there is no experience to back their assumptions. Gen-Y are educated, and opinionated. So was when I was in my 20tys, but what sets Gen-Y apart from Gen-X is we had no expectation of being herd until we had earned the right to be heard. True some Gen-X got impatient and they broke out on their own to blaze their own trails, but for the most part we paid our dues.

One of the first things I was told out of University by my first supervisor was… You know nothing, if you knew you knew nothing that would be something.

Looking back, those words stung, and at the time I disagreed with every fibre that composed my 20ty nothing existence... looking back, he was right. I had so much more to learn.

I like the fact Gen Y has very little patience and is highly educated. My biggest concern is how do you meld the best of Gen X and Gen Y. If you do that you get a very powerful social network that will rival anything else in the world.

What does this network look like? I don't have the slightest idea but it will be absolutely earthshaking. The qualities of this network that it will be dynamic, creative and resilient. It will have the best qualities of Gen X and Gen Y.

Two years ago, genius entrepreneur Andy Bowdoin came up with a brilliant idea to market internet advertising. It was set up in a multi-level marketing platform to give incentives to grow quickly. And grow quickly it did. In the space of 6 months it grew to 120,000 members with $50 mil in the coffers. There were many reasons this company waved red flags to the feds, but within 6 months of my joining, the feds had moved in and removed ASD lock stock n barrel, including all equipment and seizing the $50 mil as "forfeiture" on the grounds that it was a ponzi scheme. I lost everything. I had an art gallery at the time which was dependent on word of mouth. ASD had enabled a growing number of local entrepreneurs to view each other's websites and get paid for it. When they shut down ASD they shut down my income and my own personal marketing niche. Poor Andy lost everything and is facing criminal charges.

So beware your approach to media marketing and how you earn your dollars doing it.

I agree with most of the article, some of the ads are just weird- like the baby ones, and some are misleading- like the "try a free iPad" ones. The article talks about people who wonder if their information is being used appropriately. It'll be interesting to see if FB cracks down on these types of ads. I doubt they will, they make a lot of money from their ads.

It also depends on what your goals are (awareness, sales, recruiting, etc.). And I would add to the commonly-understood definition of positivity the word "productive." Social media as a strictly social tool isn't very interesting, or empowering, or efficient; I think the early impressions of social networking (Friendster, MySpace, et al) have negatively influenced how our employers, parents and older associates view the power and use of social media as well.

I like to view it as teamwork: give a little, get a little. Except the entire world is potentially on your team. I guess that sounds pat, but I'm a huge fan. Brazen Careerist is no exception (although it's arguably more targeted than, say, Facebook, which luckily helps filter negativity or purely social content).
