I used ViralHeat, which was useful and cheap. It had big limitations in semantic searches and managing profiles could be tough. The high end gold goes to Radian 6 from all I've heard.

As for what's missing? No one has really figured out a great way to measure positive or negative sentiment. Once they figure that one out, we'll be good... for a while, at least.

They have made the raw tools and audience for another third party to develop the next Foursquare killer.

I think it's a bit of a let down because we might of expected them to roll out a completed finished product when they just released an API and framework.

Perhaps I am a little bitter because I don't have an iPhone so I can't even use it. To me that just seems a blatant oversight as to the type of people on facebook. Realistically what % of facebook users have an iPhone? Why not just make it accessible through their website?

I do like that atleast you don't need another login and website to visit but I would like to be able to tell facebook who gets to see my location updates. Like photos I don't want to share everything with everyone. I think it does have massive potential for the future though.

Hi Rebecca,

I'm just getting started with it and we're still clarifying what our strategic social media goals are at work. I work at a co-working startup called the Hub and most of our members are made aware of events in the space through email, so I like the idea of being able to see how our email lists are using social media. I think it will give a nice layout of what platforms and campaigns would be most useful for building a strong presence in. It's giving a nice overview of who uses what.

One specific bit of information I plan to implement is integrating Linked-In in our plans to strengthen our presence. Simply because it was a network that showed up so consistently among folk who most consistently open our email.

Still experimenting with...a lot of things. So I'll keep you updated on how I maximize its use.

Rebecca Thorman What's the value of Facebook to brands? (http://bit.ly/av7Rcn) For Alice.com, we found a lot of influencers on Twitter, and our core demographic on FB. After we launched, our FBfans quickly surpassed our Twitter followers, and we're now closing in on 10,000 fans/likes. FB is where we find our mainstream audience - what about your brands? Does your brand prefer FB over Twitter or vice versa? What about other places like Flickr, YouTube? How do you make your FB page relevant? http://bit.ly/av7Rcn

It will proliferate to millions of sites and in doing so will challenge Google's search-based vision of the web's future with the possibility that the Internet likely may now shift to a social-discovery-based navigation paradigm. As titanic a development as Open Graph is, however, I'm still inclined to view Facebook as a social network well-suited to BtoC marketers and community managers but not really for BtoB. What do you think? --John

Owen Nwanze Ever feel overwhelmed by the abundance of social media/online information? I often find myself opening multiple tabs on my browser and telling myself I will revisit them. Needless to say, I rarely do. If your answer is yes, I am curious to know, do you have a specific way of organizing your daily intake of information? I'm aware of online tools like Hootsuite, iGoogle, Google Reader, etc, but I'm wondering which tool, or combination of tools, work(s) for you?

90 = percent of forum/online community members who read but don't post/contribute; they are voyeurs/lurkers
9 = percent of forum/online community members who post occasionally
1 = perent of forum/online community members who post constantly and post the majority of the forum/online community's user-generated content

The 90-9-1 rule is a model on unequal participation in the context of online applications. Jakob Nielsen came up with it in October 2006. Lithium Technologies glommed onto it and created a whole series of best practices for community management and community engagement (which are valid and excellent) around it. Lithium also built reputation management software features around the concept of rewarding superusers -- i.e., the 1% of any online community that contributes the majority of its UGC -- to drive engagement.
