I find it an interesting that they use this poem written about the pioneers of the 1850tys to entice the Gen-Y of today to buy blue jeans

"O you youths, Western youths,
So impatient, full of action, full of manly pride and friendship,
Plain I see you Western youths, see you tramping with the foremost,
Pioneers! O pioneers!"

The poem is about a “life and times” that had the average life expectancy of 39 and middle age was 20 or 21. I don’t really know what I am trying to say here, just throwing out an observation to noodle on.

The best example I've found has been Third Sector New England (www.tsne.org). Basic idea is that there are so many non-profits in nola that could benefit from sharing resources and working together to create true change.

I'm not as terribly business minded, but I do agree that over the next couple of years the organizations that survive the most are going to be those that are the most flexible and adaptable.

No. This area isn't being taken over by people with business backgrounds, it exists because of them. The novelty in social enterprise didn't come from people wanting to do good things for others. It came from using capitalistic business principles to do so. People in public health and int'l aid have been doing good for decades. Business people are just applying the things that create efficiency in their fields to organizations geared towards solving problems.

I think the building begins with the idea. Once you devise an approach to solving a particular problem in a community, it becomes a little easier to take the next step because then you can learn from people who are solving the same problem or are using the same approach you are. Do you have an idea of what your enterprise will adress?

However I did find some interesting social work/community development opportunities that either covered my expenses or deffered my debt. I was a finalist for a fellowship at the Island Institute in Maine, which is an AMAZING program (domestic). I simply ask about these practical things because the path for someone with financial burden and someone who has no debt is different.

There are no more "secure" jobs or careers anymore for most of us. Middle management is a thing of the past(not that it was ever appealing). Might as well get creative and go for broke in your career, because if you do nothing, you'll wind up broke anyways! :-) and call me morbid, but there's nothing in any religions that says "thoult shalt not die with a poor FICO score" haha!

Epecially if you're able to separate yourself from the pack with some sort of personal branding that says "I've got the academic chops to be competent AND I've some some flair and style." I'd definitely network as much as you possibly can with people doing the type of work that you want to do. Ask questions, be annoying and you never know what kind of things you'll find out.
