I'll start - Having to move to Norway for a while, I needed an unlocked GSM phone... I have an old Treo I bought on ebay for a trip to China a few yrs ago - I actually was a big fan of the Palm OS... but the Treo lacks 3G and wifi and the OS/Apps are quite "dated". I have to use Skype so need 3G and wifi. Thankfully, my wife was able to upgrade to an iPhone 4 at work, so I was able to get her old iPhone 3GS. Of course to use it here in Norway, I had to jailbreak and unlock it. It has been great - skype and whatsapp messenger have saved me a bucket of money. I have web and email always available and lots of handy, useful apps like ones for the Oslo public transit, translators, currency converters, etc. When I return to the US, I'll be dumping the old RAZR and comparing the VZW iPhone to whatever is current on Android - US Cellular is our only other carrier so the options are limited.

Wow, this looks to be the most recent post - 7 wks old - yikes! ...must be everyone is too busy on their smartphones!

There are several pros/cons about the iPhone versions/providers that complicate the issue. First there is the technology: VZW is CDMA, ATT is GSM - if you need to travel overseas, your best option is to use GSM since CDMA is either not yet available or has limited deployment. In the US, ATT, at least so far, will not unlock an iPhone so be prepared to pay up the yin-yang if you do travel abroad with it (off-topic - there are options for jailbreaking and unlocking, so unlocking is a positive for the GSM version). The other positive for ATT/GSM for some users is the ability to talk and use data (look up a web page for example) simultaneously - cannot do this with the VZW CDMA implementation. I'm on many iphone forums and this is a big issue for many people it seems. The downside to ATT is lack of coverage for many regions... ATT says they reach 97% of the US, well, what they do not say is how much is via partners nor do they discuss their lack of 3G coverage. They also say their network is faster - may be true if you are lucky enough to live within a strong signal area, but those on the periphery will find VZW to be both faster and more reliable. I live in Maine and ATT has no service within a 30 mile radius of my area and what they do offer in the closest areas does not include 3G service. Those who travel into the area get spotty service connecting to partners (actually old Unicel GSM systems now owned by VZW - you can be assured VZW will not be upgrading them to 3G!). So for many people, VZW is going to be the only choice if they want an iphone. VZW has far greater coverage for both voice and 3G data and is in the process of rolling out 4G service.

I suspect that many more recent ATT customers have switched to VZW simply to get on the unlimited data plan. It is pretty certain this will end but it is typical to grandfather those in the current plan. So the early switchers/adopters will be getting a good deal as long as the few negatives do not affect them.

For me, I have no choice... if I want an iphone, VZW is the only choice - in fact we only have 2 choices, US Cellular being the other, also CDMA. CDMA does offer some advantages: the technology is less prone to noise so calls are generally clearer and crisper, it can also maintain a connection longer if signal strength is low so less dropped calls, and if radiation is a concern, CDMA wins hands down - CDMA only transmits when you talk on your phone, not when you listen and it operates at a lower frequency thus less radiation in standby. CDMA is more expensive to implement but has greater bandwidth capacity, the use of random codes (the "code division" or "CD" part of the acronym) also offers greater security.

Anyway, I see a divided iphone market for quite some time and suspect ATT will maintain their lead. The amount of people not served by ATT are a relatively small portion of the total market.

Brittany Oster I'm way behind on the game as I still own a Blackberry. I'm very ready to switch to a Smartphone. T-Mobile has been my service provider for about 10 years. Should I switch to Verizon and wait for the i-Phone or just purchase a droid with T-Mobile? Help!!

Ryan Paugh Some Canadian official is trying to convince teachers to let students use mobile phones in the classroom (http://bit.ly/bXMl9F). I think this is a stupid idea. I'm all for integrating social technology into education, but I'm a little conservative when it comes to in-person eduction. I think time spent learning in a real-world setting is important. Adding more social tech to homework assignments is great, but these kids need to spend time unplugged, too.

They're even paying people to do it for them. It's funny. You wouldn't see this happening a couple years ago. School Boards would be doing backflips.

Ryan Paugh Read a couple months ago about how Twitter bought out Tweetie (http://bit.ly/cAW3pz) but just noticed this weekend as I was updating my apps that they finally rebranded. It was a little frustrating because I had to re-add all of my Twitter accounts. Did this bug anyone else? The bigger question I have is what will Twitters next move be? Are they in the market to acquire any other Twitter apps?
