Scott Messinger According to the Terminator movies, Skynet became self-aware at 8:11 p.m. on Tuesday. I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords!

Scott Messinger Leslie Nielsen has passed away. Everyone remembers him for his role in the Airplane movies. But I will always remember his role in the 1956 Sci-fi movie "Forbidden Planet". It's a classic, and really holds up well even today. Check it out if you haven't seen it. Here's a clip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIdF_VXTCwc

Ryan Paugh Did anybody see Inception over the weekend? I read some awesome reviews and heard some good things from people today in the office. I haven't seen it yet so don't spoil anything for me! What did you guys think of the movie?

96 weeks ago from Movie Critics and Science Fiction & Fantasy

Ryan Paugh: Sweet! Not a bad review yet. Alright guys, this is going on my to-do list for the week. I'll be back with my review by the end of the week.

Eoghann Irving So V will be back on our screens at the end of March. Is anyone still looking forward to it? I was really excited when I heard they were bringing it back last Fall, but I wasn't exactly blown away by the 4 episodes they aired.

116 weeks ago from Science Fiction & Fantasy

Ryan Healy: I kept meaning to give that show a shot, but never got around to it. Do you recommend I watch it when its back in March?

The first 4 episodes felt rushed, but they were finally building to something. And then they put it on hiatus for months. Now it's coming back, but by all accounts it's been re-tooled and has a new show runner. So I'm not sure exactly what we're going to get. I'd probably say give it an episode and see how you feel.

Eoghann Irving So I'm thinking of re-reading Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy. Has anyone else read it? Wonderfully epic space opera.

116 weeks ago from Science Fiction & Fantasy

Rachel Rueben: I thought you meant opera as in musical performance with metal brassieres and singing fat ladies (ROTFL!)

Eoghann Irving: Now that would be quite a sight.

Daniel Wood Has anyone read Neal Stephenson's Anathem? Immediately vaulted into my top 10 favorite books. Partially a conceptual successor to A Canticle for Liebowitz, with a little Cryptonomicon and Charles Stross sprinkled in.

Mark Trueblood: Yes, Anathem is definitely not a book you can just pick up for 15 minutes at a time. I think Neal Stephenson is a really important thinker. Cryptonomicon is one of the books I recommend to people who claim they don't like science fiction along with Ender's Game by O.S. Card.
Snow Crash/Diamond Age by Stephenson were also very good but obviously the work of a "younger" man ;)

Scott Messinger: Mark, I had forgotten he wrote Snow Crash. I loved that book!

Thao Le Has Avatar enhanced your perception of life? Did you enjoy the film? What did you take away from the film?

It is amazing how the media has so much power over what one could think about Avatar when one does not think about who is selling the opinion. The receptionist in my financial firm asked me if I had Pandora Depression and I could not help but smirk, she wanted to see the firm but did not want to become depressed. :)

I like the comparison to archaeology...when we dig up relics of the "past" we confront our "present" but actually its all NOW. Also notice how our quite dysfunctional economy is fueled by the long-dead remains of the earth's primordial past. And the priorities of the "lizard brain" runs U.S. politics.

R E Bradley On any given day in the UK, if you have cable, there are on average 10 episodes of Star Trek (any series). That's a lot of Trek!
