Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Despite the unemployment rate consider Providence, RI. You can still work in the Boston market.
We have a fine cluster of regional theater with a national reputation. And a fine local music scene.

And a cluster of excellent colleges, Brown University, Rhode Island School Of Design, Johnson & Wales...

North Carolina is nice too, different. Cost of living is less but so are salaries.

Good luck. I lived in WI for two years before returning to RI, don't regret it.

I love Charlotte. Uptown is fabulous, and getting better. We have NoDa which is our art district, and lots of nightlife and restaurants and local events. It still feels like a small town though.

I'm working in Wilmington right now, which is a big difference... great for people watching but I haven't made my mind up about it yet!

Paige Holden Hey everyone. I thought this might make an interesting discussion. Have any of you considered a relocation based solely on your desire to live in a specific location? If you could work anywhere, where would it be? Want to work in your dream location? Sleep on it first. http://bit.ly/9jQhda

Rebecca Thorman This week is my first week working remotely for my job (the company is in Madison, Wis and I just moved to Washington, DC). So far, so good but I can tell I'm going to miss my colleagues! I've made my boss and closest co-worker get webcams so we can video chat; we already use gchat and phone. I'm going to check out some coffee shops and occasionally work from my boyfriend's office. Are there are other suggestions to stay in the loop and not become isolated?

Ryan Paugh Just read an interesting post by a blogger buddy of mine, Kelly Sutton, who says that NYC is a better place than San Francisco for both entry-level professionals and for start-up business. He makes some interesting points. On the entry-level side he talks about NYC being a better social scene for young professionals. On the start-up side he talks about how crowded Silicon Valley is getting and that NYC is less risky. What do you guys think? NYC versus San Fran? Who wins?

@Lindsey - I like your way of thinking... building contacts and such is a small version of prodev or future growth.

@Ethan - That's a good point too. Didn't think about it in a sense of testing out an industry. I suppose I've done that my whole career until now too.

@Michael - I'm like that too. I've always said I prefer environment over anything else because if you are miserable for 40 hours a week, then who cares what opportunities arise later on down the road.

Just because they don't say "we promote people" doesn't mean they don't, as much as the opposite. I think the only way to be sure is if the company says "yeah, it's a dead-end job and we never, ever help people move up here."

Yet if that's the case, I'd take the job anyway and work for the world's most honest company.

But, with people's mortgages where they are right now many would be lucky to recoup total monthly expense at all. Especially in a condo/townhouse situation, becuase you also have to add in maintenance fees. And that doesn't include insurance or taxes either. So, in many cases, all renting does is help stem the loss, not eliminate it all together. It's a really, really hard issue - one I've been going through myself.

Your point about hiring a property manager is a great one. I'd be interested to see if more companies start providing this option as a relocation benefit to homeowners who can't sell.

Paige Holden Recently, I quit my job at a PR firm in NYC to take an internal communications position in DE. Reading your comments you might find Marcus Buckinghams work and Stregthfinder 2.0 by Gallop useful. The message is somepeople just have strengths in certain areas, like agency side and weaknesses perhaps in client side. The work encourages you to do an audit on how you actually feel, perform etc. Some people need the cut and thrust of being outthere and I myself find somedays working at home a little less challenging.

We do need challenge at work!

Hi Aria,

Getting involved in the Twitter/social media community in NYC is a GREAT way to meet people. There are a lot of tweetups on a regular basis - I used to do SMPR, but I am sure there are others. Just search Twitter for some conversations and find relevant hashtags to follow.

Also, check out professional associations for the advertising industry. That's a great way to network with people in your field.

Michael Levitt I've recently relocated from Windsor, Ontario to Toronto. Going from a an area with about 300,000 people to the GTA with well over 6 million people can be quite a culture shock, Thankfully I worked in the Chicago area for years, so I'm used to the traffic. Make sure you spend some time doing things you like to do in your new town!

Ryan Paugh Big city or small city? Where do you prefer to live and work? I've always leaned towards smaller places, but I'm thinking that the next city I live in might end up being larger than I am used to. When it comes to career opportunities I tend to think that big cities have more advantages. There are more opportunities from a social standpoint too. Still, I like the simplicity of living in a smaller city and I'd probably miss that. Which do you prefer?

I used to live in Hoboken and it was kind of sad. No one there really cares about the community because most are young professionals that only plan to be there for a couple years. The restaurants and bars are thriving and fantastic, so Hoboken looks great on the surface (and I enjoyed living there), but the lack of community involvement has opened the door for sleazy politicians and corrupt corporate partners. It's really tragic.
