Health Care

The purpose of this group is to discuss health reform in a broad, bipartisan way. There is a slew of biased information out there and the more exposure we have to it, the better we can understand where everyone is coming from. And more importantly, where health care is going.

Becky Benishek Looking for a rewarding career in education and caregiving combined? The American School Counselor Association says there is an average of one school counselor for every 457 students in US schools--and there should be one counselor for every 250 students. What's that tell us? More school counselors are needed! http://bit.ly/ffFq7F

For example, in NYC, there are over 300 school counselors who are in excess (meaning they have no permanent position because schools no longer have money to hire them). The NYC schools hasn't placed a new counselor on payroll since 2008 unless s/he was bilingual. I would not recommend anyone pursue school counseling until the municipal budget situation improves, even if kids need services. It really is sad.

I was at a training class a week or so ago (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention instructor training) and something that came up was the need for caregivers/counselors/etc for when these kids grow up, too--autistic kids, troubled kids, etc. Apparently there's a severe shortage there too.

I was reminded of that when I saw this article: "As population ages, demand up for home health care workers" ( http://bit.ly/haWIug ), though it's a little OT for this thread.

Becky Benishek How much do you REALLY know about Alzheimer's and related dementias? The Alzheimer's Association just put out their 2011 Facts & Figures report, and Kim Warchol of Dementia Care Specialists has a great read on it: http://ow.ly/4fmeE

Becky Benishek We all know someone with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, or who has behavioral problems, special needs or is bullied in school. We also know caregivers, nurses, social workers, security officers, people who place those with special needs in jobs. My new company has two FB Pages that revolve around these topics, and I hope you consider supporting them. It would mean a TON. Thank you! Bobbi Alexander Just finishing my pre-nursing courses in preparation to apply to a community college nursing program. Have A LOT of questions, mainly about what type of nursing to go into. I'm interested in a lot of areas of medicine, which is part of what attracts me to nursing. What types of nurses are most in demand? What types of positions provide the best quality of life? Offer best opportunity to grow in the field?

Tim MacDonald: that petition is pretty short-sighted, just a list of wants by gen y. the health reform convo means thinking about the much broader picture

Tim MacDonald: that said, it's incredibly important for gen y to be in the convo. otherwise we'll be in the same place boomers are when the time comes

Here's a point:Are there countries fighthing to do the opposite of what we the US want to do over the health care issue?

127 weeks ago from Health Care

Akshay Kapur: Not the whole system, but components of it. Like you mentioned, private markets supplementing public coverage are growing in Japan & Europe

Other nations have a health care battle as well. Just different from ours. That's why it's hard to comapre the US = world.

Lesley Heizman agree Akshay-this is a must happen. Going through it will be painful but the advantages would be awesome in the end. Esp. for patient care.

New Zealand has health care like Obama wants and guess what, they say it stinks. 6 months for a doctor.

127 weeks ago from Health Care

Akshay Kapur: Though I agree a universal system may not be the answer, New Zealand and US are incomparable on most counts, so not the fairest comparison.

Lesley Heizman EMR's already exist at hospitals, they just aren't connected to each other. Most can't conform to 1 standard so I don't see this happening!

127 weeks ago from Health Care

Akshay Kapur: Right on Lesley. Though, this is a "must happen" scenario. Integration is key. The network starts from regions then states then nationwide.

Dawn A Crawford What does everyone think about EMRs (electronic medical records)? I think they are the future but some are worried.

127 weeks ago from Health Care

Akshay Kapur: They're as good as the people using them. They can make a tremendous impact in tracking/coordinating care. Again, end users must be savvy.

I'm from Detroit, but was just at a Telemedicine Symposium in Los Angeles. Dr. Shiong was a keynote speaker and has a goal to bring electronic medical records to light. It's already been experimented with in a small location and has been working out really great. If anyone has questions I know a pretty good deal about what EMR's will look like and how they will be used. There are obviously still some obstacles, but the basic developmental outline is really mind-blowing.
