Jim Armstrong Hey Brazen...hope you're having a great weekend. Random question but I thought I would tap into the community. My roommate is looking to re-locate to the North Carolina area (Raleigh/Durham & Charlotte would be his top choices). He has 2.5 years of experience as a media buyer at two established media agencies in NYC. Anyone know of any opps. in NC in marketing and/or strategy? He's looking to move from the media side to a more traditional marketing strategy role? Thanks guys!

I have enlisted the support of one of my colleagues to take us through the basic ad units offered by YouTube and how small businesses can leverage these for their brands/products. Jamie Nacht Farrell When 3 olympic bball players joined the MIA Heat, controversy abounded. What was not talked about was the $30 million these players left ON THE TABLE to be a part of a winning team. There are business lessons to be learned here: being a part of something bigger then YOU is more important to some ppl. Being challenged everyday is necessary to get better. Would you take the 'team' and the 'challenging job' over a lot of money? Why or why not? Have you ever done so before? http://bit.ly/dq42vX

From a recruiting perspective, it definitely helps to find the time to talk about possibilities. Unless I and my candidates have really spent the time together to establish what they can and want to do, it would be tough to make this a relationship. Also, if you snub me, I am sure to categorize you as rude. All of us are terribly busy but those who find the tome to be courteous leave their marks. I do take them when they are the actual recruiter or hiring manager. I ignore the rest. With the salary positions, I always take those calls because I've been able to refer them to contacts who would be interested.

I refuse calls from the rest when they use a call center or calling service. I will only talk to someone if they are actually from the company or high level. I just don't have time to deal with some 18 yrs old reading from a script.

It's pretty sad but a large private financial firm tried to recruit me last week and they used a calling service. I asked two questions and the caller said that I knew more about that firm than she does. All she had was 3 sentences and 15 questions to ask on a sheet. Needless to say, my view about the quality of management at that firm just went down the drain.

Matthew Everett I recently quit a dead-end part-time job in order to devote more time to my developing freelance pursuits. I've replaced all the income I 'lost,' but now everyone around me seems to think I 'don't have a job.' How do you deal with the idea most people have that a career is some low-paid, 9-5 struggle to get the bills paid? Why can't you be self-employed and like what you do? Honestly, everyone seemed to accept the no-benefit, low-wage, part-time job as par for the course.

I think you have a realistic and pragmatic understanding of what it takes to be your on your own and the approach you are taking makes a lot of sense. I wish you the best of luck and if you are not using Linked In yet, I strongly recommend you join and set up an account.

I'm not sure the words "online" and "research" are how I would describe what happens when my colleagues in Human Resources do a google search on candidates. It's more like cursory judgment.

Anyway, glad the article has you thinking.

I think it depends on the job - obviously someone who is fresh out of school will be judged a little differently than a CFO. Benjamin Paul Schuman I would like to branch into online copywriting. I know that is a vague term but it is the best that I can come up with now. I've been advised to just look for entry-level jobs with ad agencies. That's been tough and so far I've gotten no responses. I also don't have time to intern right now. I'm thinking about going back to school to fill in the gaps, but I don't know what to study. Does anybody have any programs or subjects to recommend?

I think Jamie's suggestion of blogging and Melissa's suggestion of working with a graphic designer are good ideas. An agency is going to want to see a portfolio, so that will help you. You can also start following people at agencies you might want to work for on Twitter and following their blogs and post relevant content to showcase your writing skills and get your name out there. In my experience, you have to have some experience, usually through an internship, to get hired at a agency and most entry-level writing positions. Other options would be to apply for jobs at places where you want to work, but as an assistant or something else where you can prove yourself.

I really appreciate it. I now plan to focus on getting a job as an assistant, which may mean that I'll need to relocate to a less-competitive job market or gain more administrative experience even if it means working in other industries. Either way, your comments have been very helpful. The industry I came from is film, where there is no way to begin without a full-time internship. I've been getting the impression that in advertising, there are indeed paid entry-level positions (which basically do not exist in film), and that is encouraging.
