Allison Cheston I wrote this post in response to the Mediabistro Job Search Bootcamp group I'm coaching. Many job seekers want to broaden their offering instead of focus it. Let me know what YOU think: http://www.forbes.com/sites/work-in-progress/2012/02/15/are-you-employer...

TOP IDEA: Marie McKinney-Oates I run a relationship/marriage advice blog focused on engaged and newlywed couples. I used to provide couples counseling, but I'm beginning to believe that counseling at this stage is not very effective (the couples have rose-colored glasses and are preoccupied with the wedding, which I completely understand). I want to create an information product out of my services instead. Are there any suggestions on topics to cover and ideas for marketing a product like this online?

We once had a really interesting conversation in one of my philosophy theory classes about choosing to do something in which you excel but is not particularly interesting or challenging verses something that is more challenging but you enjoy more. I'm very much of the type to do what is interesting to me, which is not always congruent with the areas in which I excel. I'd argue it makes me a more dynamic person, and one who is capable of mediating across subject and industry boundaries, though I am sure it could also be argued that this approach reduces the likelihood of achieving mastery in any one specific area.

Mehul Kar Question: I am the only person managing a new online community (CollegeDesis). What is your opinion on singular vs. plural pronoun usage? Kate Davids I read The Design of Everyday Things recently and it occurred to me that that book is old. He barely mentions computers, if at all, and his examples are antiquated. And you know what? It's still highly applicable and worth a thorough read. I wrote a blog post on it, but wanted to hear what you all think about how the changes in technology have affected what "good design" means. Physical businesses are begining to use QR codes. I would consider, based on the specific app, which business or venue it naturally relates to and get creative in advertising your app. This could range from a formal partnership to co-advertise with a business to a viral campaign such as a QR scavenger hunt at an industry conference or within a city or town.

Try to build a relationship with the people who run the site long-term. In the short-term, see what it would take to get your app reviewed by them, or at least looked at.

I'd also recommend contact companies that have launched apps which sold well to see what you can learn from them.
