Monica Valentinelli What makes a horror movie a "horror" movie in your mind? For example, I haven't seen Black Swan, but seems like moviegoers are lumping that into horror. Just saw Harry Potter, and I feel that squarely fits into dark fantasy.

I would agree with Cooper. I think Horror and Thrillers are separate, though sometimes they overlap, like a Venn diagram.

To my mind, the difference is in the goals of the movies. A horror, of any type from gore to psychological, is out to scare the pants off of you. A thriller is out to get your adrenaline racing. Often this is done by putting the main character in a scary situation but it can also be done by cloak and dagger fights or high suspense hide and seek games. Horror can use the same methods (hide and seek with the monster is a classic), but it's goal is not just to get you to hold your breath as you find out what will happen next, it's to get you to scream when it happens.

There's only been a few that really scared me. The origonal "Alien" is one. "In Cold Blood", as something based on a true story is another. The original "Cape Fear" with Robert Mitchum is another good one.

Other than those and a few others, the rest are not even worth watching for me.

Brett Kunsch It's the weekend, so I'm done with the work talk my fellow BCs. What movie are you most looking forward to this Spring/Summer? And do you predict Hollywood will give us better entertainment than last year?

Brett Kunsch: Quite true. And those 3D tv's are not going to do the trick, no matter how hard they try.

Lauren Shanks What is everyone watching right now? My husband and I looked at theatre listings last weekend and couldn't come up with one thing we both wanted to see. This time five years ago, I feel like we were at the movies almost every weekend. Are movies getting worse?

I've seen it twice and while it appears to be a normal horse story it's about Penny Chenery and how Secretariat almost didn't become the Triple Crown winner. The movie will put people on the edge of their seats before the races even though you eventually realize you now the outcome of each race and the photography of the races puts you on the horse's backs and on the track. I'm a horse person, so that may be more appealing to me. It's done very well, and I understand Diane Lane is up for possible Oscar. The other ones I'm interested in are Red, Harry Potter (sorry to hear it's a bomb), The Fighter with Christian Bale and Matt Damon, and Disney's Tangled.

Vanessa Gallo Hey! I just saw "Love and Other Drugs" last night and I would describe it as a rom-com (formulaic) cross-dressing as "Knocked Up" (dude humour) and "Up in the Air" (pharma industry expose). It had its issues but I recommend it if you want to be entertained and are in the mood for love. Check out my full review here: http://daremytruth.com/love-and-other-drugs-sort-of-intoxicates

Ryan Paugh I just started reading Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy after seeing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movie. I actually skipped The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (the book) and went straight for The Girl Who Played With Fire. Should I go back and read the first book even though I saw the movie and heard it was very accurate to the storyline?

Elizabeth Marling Is anyone a Lars Von Trier fan? I just saw his most recent 'Antichrist' and personally I loved it. I know he's fairly polarizing as a film maker. I'm curious if anyone is familiar with his work. I think if you are Catholic, it is easier to watch his films without being offended. He kind of takes the teachings of Catholicism and makes them literal, then takes them to extreme conclusions. This is my theory on his work---Roger Ebert seems to agree at least.

Amy Myers Recently saw an incredible documentary, based on a book by Michael Pollen, called "The Botany of Desire." Amazing look at how we've influenced the lives of plants and vice versa. Not only is the topic interesting, but it is one of the most well done, eloquent documentaries I've seen. Anyone else seen it, or read the book?

Ryan Paugh My girlfriend and I were talking about our childhood yesterday and somehow we got on the topic of watching Rated-R movies that were way above out maturity level. It was kinda fun to reminisce. My first Rated-R movie was Backdraft. What was yours? Do you think that the ratings system has become more lenient since we were kids or more strict?

Kyle Hendrickson Saw Toy Story 3 this weekend and the thoughts it inspired within me are too numerous to name. Truly loved this film.
