Monthly Goal Meet-Up

Each month, we'll check in with our goals from the previous month and our plans for the new month.

You can also tweet about your goals using the hashtag #goalmeetup.

To participate in the meet-up:

1. Post a list of your career/life related goals for the current month, along with your checked off goals from the previous month if you'd like, on your own blog
2. Come back to this group and leave a link to your post in the comments (*If you don't have your own blog, feel free to share your list of goals in the comments section of the post to join in!)
3. Then, check out everyone else's lists as they leave comments - click their links, visit their blogs, say hello, meet, greet and support each other because that's what it's all about!

Penelope Trunk I am starting to think that we can have only one goal at a time. We have the things we do to keep our life going -- to keep the status quo. And we have one goal that is a game changer. Hard to handle more than one game changer. And maybe we shouldn't be bogged down by calling stuff a goal that is really maintenance. What do you guys think? Or maybe I'm just toying with the idea of being an underachiever.

Instead of having one's attention diluted by too many commitments, you have your mental resources focused on just one. I've done this my self on a big project I've worked on and I don't regret not doing the things I didn't do for a minute. It gave me plenty of time and energy to focus on the big things that really matter.

Scott Keegan: I agree Penelope. Too many goals is like trying to multi-task, and our brains are just not wired that way. Also, many people confuse tasks for goals.

Mehul Kar I don't have a monthly goal, but my goal is to be able to do 600 pushups by the end of the summer (Sept 1). It's been a couple years since I exercised regularly, and although pushups doesn't really count as exercise, it's a good start. I'm recording my progress in a google docs spreadsheet: http://bit.ly/bf75l2

Mariel McKone Leonard I've really been enjoying posting my goals and reading about all of yours, and I had a post mostly ready to go for this month's goals, but now I'm considering completely changing my blog, and possibly some of my professional goals as well. This is prompted by finishing my first year of grad school and realizing how much my course has shifted over the past year - not necessarily a bad thing, but very different from what I expected. How do you do course correction? or decide if its necessary?

I followed your example and joined up so I can see about making progress on my dissertation. I hope this gives me the energy I need. I started a wordpress blog just for this reason. I plan to update daily. I'm going to use it as a work in progress diary. Thanks for your insight on Writer's Rising blog.

Rebecca Thorman We are a canceling culture (http://bit.ly/dy1yLC). I'm certainly guilty of it. As the author of that post says, sometimes canceling feels like you got time back. But if the point is to spend time with another person, why does it feel satisfying to cancel? Rescheduling is the new black. But what do you think, is it okay to cancel - yay or nay?

There are some people where it is totally ok. There are some people that you have the kind of relationship where there is an understanding and it is not offensive to cancel. With some of my really close friends, that type of understanding exists. Excellent point!

Sometimes I make plans and then on that day I'm just too worn out or don't feel like getting together. So I cancel and I feel like a weight has been lifted & I can relax.

I agree with Marie. If we adjust our schedules to where we're not so overloaded then keeping the appointment isn't so difficult. We don't feel so worn out. It's not just about keeping the appointment, it's about committing when you REALLY CAN commit! and not just saying that you will.
