Amy Ng Veterans Day gives us a chance to publicly express our thanks to our nation’s heroes and their families for the sacrifices they made to secure our freedom. In NYC, Citi will honor veterans and active duty members of the Armed Forces, along with their families, in a Veterans Day remembrance and celebration at Citi Pond at Bryant Park, beginning at 8 AM. All branches of the military will be represented at a special ceremony. If you are nearby, we encourage you to attend.

JenG I separated from the Air Force after 16 years of service to pursue my dream career. Now I want to help other military members design a civilian career they love. I'm looking for some insight from those who are either about to retire/separate or those who have just gone through it to identify challenges and frustrations. Can you help? Riley Carson Do you find yourself getting pulled into a niche? Did you let yourself grow into your niche organically? I've tried not to be a "military blog" because most blogs in that niche are of the same political vantage (republican, christian, country music) but I keep getting a sharp spike in readership each time I write posts about female military topics (http://wp.me/p1blqP-Nz and http://wp.me/p1blqP-to).

Are you doing it for fun? Then it's whatever interest you.

Are you doing it for marketing purpose? Topic will be things of interest to your prospects.

Are you going for traffic? Then it will be controversial topics.

Bottomline, you have to define what you want out of the blog because you will spend an awful lot of time on it.

Perhaps to add: once you define your goal/mission for the blog, you should let it guide you on major decisions you will have to make. This encompasses conception to execution, i.e.:blog name, tone of articles/blogpost titles, layout decisions, frequency of updating, and often neglected, how you market it.

Riley Carson It's Veteran's Day. It's bizarre that people often say "Happy Veterans Day", since it's meant to be in memorium since it's the day of the Armistice that ended WWI. Anyone else feel a little strange when they're told to have a "Happy Veterans Day"? To me, it's as ironic as saying "Have fun storming the castle".

Just gives me another opportunity to remember my friends who never returned from Vietnam, and the spouses, children and family they left behind.

Actually, "storming the castle" would be fun, compared to climbing out of a trench to charge a hill in the face of intense machine gun, artillery and rocket fire. :)

IMHO, it's "happy" as long as our country sticks to the ideals that the fallen died for--and other veterans and service members VOLUNTEER to protect.

Rebecca Thorman I was in DC this wkend and was struck by how cool/important the jobs were of those I met - two people worked for the FBI in top-secret positions, many were in the Coast Guard, one girl sold weapons to other countries, several lawyers/finance, another sold jets, and yet another sold helicopters. The quality of conversation as a result seemed better than in other cities. Have you found this to be true in DC? Does a strong gov't sector create strong jobs? Are smart people concentrated there?

JRandom42 Got drafted in 1970. Given Dad's own military history (442nd RCT), couldn't very well argue that I wanted to dodge the draft. Stayed in the Infantry the whole time. Stayed in till 1983, got medicalled out as a result of the Grenada adventure. Got my BSCS while on active duty.

In a casual conversation, he asked the chief, "Chief, when are you going to retire?"

Chief looked at him, sipped his coffee, and said, "Never"

The LT replied, "But Chief, you're close to mandatory retirement age!"

Chief took another sip of his coffee, looked at the LT (who was only a few years older than his grandson) with a steely gaze, and said, "General of the Army Omar Nelson Bradley served in this Army for over 67 years, and he wasn't even Airborne!"

That pretty much ended the conversation.

Jamie Nacht Farrell I have worked with and interviewed thousands of people who have past military experience and 1) Thus far, all work experience has been 100% positive (discipline, quick to think, reliable, etc). 2) I have also been in a position where I've wanted to hire people with prior military experience and have not been able to because they do not have a degree (yet). Based on the availability of online education and the GI Bill, why don't more military students take advantage of this?

I think many of our young Soldiers don't know where to start, so I send mine to the local Education Services Center. I'm pretty sure part of the problem is that our current promotion system does not value civilian education: if I get another degree, it does nothing to improve my chance of promotion. It does improve my chance of becoming an Officer, but even that isn't a guarantee.

For folks who are about to get out, or are already out of the Military, they should definitely be talking to their VA counselor about education benefits. The VA administers Post-9/11 GI Bill and Vocational Rehabilitation, both excellent programs.

Jamie - after our recent discussion, I thought you might find this of interest:

Veterans One Source Act of 2010

Senate Considers Establishment of Online Veterans' Benefit Resource

If passed, Senate Bill S.3355, would direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to establish and maintain an Internet website that provides information on the benefits, resources, services, and opportunities available for veterans and their families and caregivers, including veterans' benefits provided through the VA and the Department of Labor, tax benefits, social security benefits, state and local resources, and small business assistance.

The bill requires the proposed website to: (1) consolidate, expand on, and improve information and links from other existing websites relating to such benefits, resources, services, and opportunities; and (2) integrate dynamic Internet features and virtual interface tools to provide a personalized, interactive, and user-centered Internet experience.

Rebecca Thorman Do you think there are conflicting attitudes when grads enlist in the military? I was fascinated when I read this post in the WSJ - http://bit.ly/8ZOU6s - It talks about all the praise that's given to grads going to elite colleges, but when a grad enlists, the reaction isn't the same and parents often announce it without the same grandeur. What do you think?

'What the f___ is this? I didn't sign up for any of this killing and dying s___! Let me out of here!"

That's when we tackled his ass, dragged him back into the bunker, and the platoon sergeant grabbed him by the collar, and bellowed (and was heard above the gunfire and shelling), 'What part of Army, soldering, killing, bleeding and dying didn't you understand, little boy?"

Needless to say, he was on the return flight to the States, with an other than honorable discharge.

Kevin Durbin Showing my age here - retired from the US Army in 2004; spent most of my career @Ft.Bragg in the 82D between deployments and my last duty station was Ft. Drum, NY. I have a brother who is 9 years younger that is still in the Navy. I learned a great deal from my career travels and would still encourage younger folks to join and be a part of the Armed Forces if only for a single tour.
