Becky Benishek Looking for a rewarding career in education and caregiving combined? The American School Counselor Association says there is an average of one school counselor for every 457 students in US schools--and there should be one counselor for every 250 students. What's that tell us? More school counselors are needed! http://bit.ly/ffFq7F

For example, in NYC, there are over 300 school counselors who are in excess (meaning they have no permanent position because schools no longer have money to hire them). The NYC schools hasn't placed a new counselor on payroll since 2008 unless s/he was bilingual. I would not recommend anyone pursue school counseling until the municipal budget situation improves, even if kids need services. It really is sad.

I was at a training class a week or so ago (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention instructor training) and something that came up was the need for caregivers/counselors/etc for when these kids grow up, too--autistic kids, troubled kids, etc. Apparently there's a severe shortage there too.

I was reminded of that when I saw this article: "As population ages, demand up for home health care workers" ( http://bit.ly/haWIug ), though it's a little OT for this thread.

Becky Benishek Autism affects 1 in 110 children. Isn't it great when you find something that helps? Find out how trained service dogs aid autistic children: http://bit.ly/eFBWIU . What other positive behavior boosters do you know?

Becky Benishek We all know someone with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, or who has behavioral problems, special needs or is bullied in school. We also know caregivers, nurses, social workers, security officers, people who place those with special needs in jobs. My new company has two FB Pages that revolve around these topics, and I hope you consider supporting them. It would mean a TON. Thank you!
