TOP IDEA: La Donna Lokey Have the current economic conditions made jobseekers feel such a sense of desperation that they will apply to almost any open position if they have even an iota of related experience? As a recruiting professional, I can't imagine that this approach has ever proven effective for a jobseeker - yet I continue to see it happen and wonder why?

So, yes, resumes get thrown against postings hoping something will 'stick' and that magical phone call comes through.

Sometimes, the recruiter process helps a LOT, because that person has actually SEEN your resume, and has spoken with you, so they are better equipped to advocate for you to be interviewed. Three of my jobs came about that way, and I love my recruiters for being my cheerleaders. I'm 39, with 20+ years of Corporate America under my belt, a mortgage, car payment, loans, etc...Job hunting is a daunting task -- those bills don't go on hold just because you're out of job...desperation happens. :/

My recommendation is to find a headhunter/recruiting organization or three and keep them up to date on your situation, checking in with them every 6 months or so, refresh your resume with them, etc. Consider them your parachute for the day someone calls you into the conference room after lunch and tells you that your and 20 others' contracts are being terminated early due to budget cuts, and Friday is your last day.
