Barter on Brazen

Have you ever needed a service, a referral, a recommendation, or a product?

This group is designed as a forum for entrepreneurs, freelance professionals, and bloggers that believe in the potential and in the power of bartering.

Let's support each other and support the positive growth of our businesses through the successful trade and exchange of products and/or services through the barter system!

Network Leader: Jason H. Parker

Jason H. Parker I've been thinking lately about the importance of building social capital, or essentially, positioning oneself as a central node in a network of interconnected relationships. What do you do in your professional life to build social capital? What tools/tips/questions have you found to be effective for you in building these quality relationships?

Personally I call myself a connector whilst I'm working with Enspiral - I connect people, places, things, ideas and locations to make things happen. I think the important thing is listening - without that you can't really be that connector.
Enspiral itself is all about building social capital in the sense of social enterprise - supporting purpose over profit. We focus our talents & skills on great projects/relationships with NGO's & Social Enterprises.... we're kind of a social enterprise FOR social enterprises you could say.

I also co-host a series of workshops which supports idea innovation & project incubation for social innovators in Wellington, NZ - where I now call my hometown.

So in essence - listening & analysis helps build networks and pro-activity/action helps build social capital I guess?

I once had an admin who was really mean to me until I went and checked out one of her plays (it wasn't a political move, I really wanted to see the play). The other thing I do is find opportunities to be with people in non-work settings. Going to a conference and then hitting the dance floor, always seems to change the dynamics of the relationship.

Tracy Brisson I'm launching a free e-course that will feature 22 short career management and job search lessons emailed to people every 1-2 days. Each lesson takes 30 minutes of reflection. After writing all the lessons- and coming up with a song inspiration for each- I'm having writer's block for a title. I'd love to play off the summer aspect of the timing. If anyone can come up with a title, I'll barter a free hour of Skype-based life or career coaching, as well as credit you in the eCourse. Thanks!

Jared Sperli I am offering an extended free trial of itSoftware's Security Suite in exchange for feedback from your IT staff. Minimum of 20 computers in the business but prefer organizations with over 100. I realize that it is unlikely to find many people in a business with that size here, but if you do, I can help your company kick viruses' asses and keep computers clean.

TOP IDEA: Clay Forsberg "The government's not going to help you ... so get over it! Empower your neighborhood instead" The public assistance pendulum has swung past the reach of those who truly need it. And it doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon. There needs to be a different approach, a different plan. I'd like to hear input on the idea of taking responsibility over social issues by creating non-governmental neighborhood groups. Edward Antrobus I'm looking for a Perl programmer to help me with a CGI script that isn't working properly. My script allows clients to upload their manuscript for me to perform formatting and file conversion to epub and mobipocket (Kindle) ebook formats. Brett Kunsch I've been meeting some cool people in person (in NYC) and talking to others over the phone/Skype from our Brazen community. I even have a killer bartering partnership going on its fifth week! Location independence has been a lonely road sometimes, so it's been refreshing to have some chats with others who are doing interesting work. How many people have you reached out to beyond the discussions? What stories can you share that will inspire others to do the same?

I've learned a great deal from all of them, and I suspect some of the relationships I've formed will be ongoing.

My bartering partnership has allowed me to get an outsider's view on the operations of my business, my brand, and how I'll proceed in the future. It's been a game changer - can't wait to share my new brand in the coming weeks!

The more people I talk to, the more often I want to do it! Glad you've found the same, Sam.

Brett Kunsch When people ask me how I get stuff done, I say, "I got a guy" (well, actually, a gal via Brazen!). (which we all have to a certain extend) and the latter: 'What will my family think...' is one that also worries many. I tend to work with my clients on proving them wrong in terms of the first one and in regards to the family, help them work out WHO is exactly expecting WHAT.
I found that with most of my clients it is actually themselves who don't want to let their families down (rather than the family simply expecting the person to take over the family business or do what THEY think is right) because they value family very highly. However, this can be dealt with as well, by establishing a route that will be good for both the family and the indivudal!
