I don't like last minute changes in plan, so I hesitated. But I ultimately picked the story I had only a short amount of time to prepare for. (Nobody knows me yet.) The meeting turned out to be not much, but it did provide me with a possible angle...how poorly attended town Neighborhood watch meetings tend to be.

You might write something along the lines of "I've noticed that your blog focuses on (try to put to less negatively than "terrible Wii games from the bargain bin"). It seems like it's mostly about resumes now. From what I can tell, at least in my area, it's all experience over quality. I mean, yes, experience means you've been gathering the skills you need to theoretically do the job, but what about stagnation? What about those who are okay, but not good?

And more importantly in my view, what about those just starting out? There seems to be no room for us, except in the mailroom.

@ chris(tina)
The mailroom's a good place to start. It's never easy breaking into journalism. I came late to it, nine years after graduating. After resigning from a job I hated, I spent weeks ringing round local and firing off my CV. Eventually a local free newspaper offered me unpaid work experience. Within three days, I had my big break. There was an IRA attack on my town and I was one of the first people on the scene. My story was the splash that week and I haven't really looked back since.

There are so many gaming websites, blogs and mags that the audience is extremely splintered, making it hard for anyone to make money. Sure, the Internet gives everyone a voice, but most of those voices aren't worth hearing. :) The other big reason is that there are VERY few paid gigs in games writing, and they're all held by the same small cadre of writers.

Seems like a lot of sites just let everything fly--no style guide, no editorial process, no fact checking. I'm currently trying to convince the blog I work with to ID their audience and its needs instead of just putting up whatever and to adhere to some kind of editorial guideline.

I wouldn't mind doing it for free so much if people would just respect the medium and the subject. And if I didn't have to pay for all the games I cover by myself.
