INTJs

For those of the INTJ (Myers-Briggs) personality type. We are idea people, self-confident and logical, perfectionist "system builders," calm and rational, ultra selective but supremely loyal to those who meet our standards, the workhorses who get it done without fuss and drama. We are many of the world's scientists, engineers, programmers, teachers, professors, business and military leaders, lawyers and judges.

I have always liked this description of INTJs as having a "rational mastermind" temperament. (http://keirsey.com/handler.aspx?s=keirsey&f=fourtemps&tab=5&c=mastermind)

I'm an INTJ and am strongly introverted, and there have been times when I wasn't believed because I was nervous.

I just read the following article at http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/nurtureshock/archive/2009/12/28/the-truth...
The article states:"(In comparison, shy, truth-telling introverts often get anxious during a confrontation and thus mistakenly get accused of lying.)"

Has this happened to you?

Tue, 12/29/2009 - 7:39am

Can't say it really has actually. For me at least.
I think INTJs come from a place of strong convictions and usually that'll carry them through a convincing argument. Mind you, if the argument is accusatory to begin with, we do get thrown off a bit

What's the best present an INTJ could get for holidays/ birthdays?

Mon, 12/07/2009 - 2:02pm

A voucher for a brand name or company that they are 100% obviously into, based on past purchases - do not guess. Then leave them to spend it how and when they want. They will appreciate the thought, like the systematic approach to allowing themself to choose the precise gift - and it'll save you the hassle of thinking to hard. What are others' thoughts?

Tue, 12/08/2009 - 6:34am

A copy of Neil Fiore's "The Now Habit". Mr. Fiore's assumption is that most procrastination is the effect of perfectionism that most of us (INTJs) are guilty of.

Tue, 12/08/2009 - 9:01am

I agree with Chris, for sure!

Mind, gift certs can be a little impersonal sometimes. These things never go wrong with me: CD's, books, t-shirts, something fair trade, stationary, scarves :)

Wed, 12/09/2009 - 4:08pm

A book or book voucher for sure-or stationery!

Thu, 12/10/2009 - 1:46am

My favourites are nonfiction books and gadgetry (thinkgeek.com, hiking/camping tools, etc.)

Thu, 12/10/2009 - 11:58pm

In my fiance's incredibly INTJ family, each member creates lists for what they want, and distribute it to everyone else. A little overly systematic, a little stand-off-ish, a little too direct. The perfect solution for INTJs. :-D

Fri, 12/25/2009 - 1:51am

A gift certificate to a book store.

What is your greatest strength as an INTJ?

Fri, 11/13/2009 - 11:15am

My greatest strength as an INTJ is my ability to stay even-keeled and in control no matter what is thrown at me. I don't have many extreme ups or extreme downs, and I'm usually prepared to handle any situation because of it.

That said, this can also be a weakness. Sometimes you need to be really excited and sometimes you need to be able to empathize with people completely - even if they are going through something that you don't totally understand.

What is your greatest strength as an INTJ?

Fri, 11/13/2009 - 1:26pm

In the last couple of years I have finally enabled myself to replace that elusive "understanding" or "compassion" with a set of reasonable expectations regarding emotions and reactions to events. Hey, it works for me, and I think only an INTJ would or could do what I have. :-)

Mon, 11/16/2009 - 5:30am

My ability to learn fast.
And like you Ryan, I tend to not have coronaries in crises (but am secretly freaking out inside sometimes).

I'm not terribly emotional, but am very good at thinking up solutions to things :)

Sat, 11/28/2009 - 11:03am

Finding logic within chaos!

Wed, 12/09/2009 - 8:49pm

Problem solving

Thu, 12/10/2009 - 1:47am

My greatest INTJ strength is strategically figuring out what role different people should play in a campaign. It helps me be efficient and effective in my work.

Tue, 12/22/2009 - 11:14am

Identifying trends and patterns, which leads to vision on how to respond. I'm doggedly determined until my vision comes true, even if I have to use personal time to accomplish it.

I just did the test in this group (a page or two back) and I scored 100 for introversion. Still an INTJ by the way -did the full Myers Briggs 10 years ago. At that time I was mortified by my introverted ways. Now, not so much. Now I really appreciate my rich inner life, and I make myself go out because it makes me feel better. I love coming home again just as much! So what's changed? I moved to a career (researcher, writer) that suits my personality. Any other introverts in a career misfit here?

Thu, 11/05/2009 - 6:29pm

Katherine Briggs and Isabella Briggs Myers based the MBTI on Carl Jung's personality type theory. According to Jung we are born with our best fit type and our life experiences help us figure out what that best fit type is. Ten years ago, the findings surprised you and now you have discovered the fit.

Thu, 11/05/2009 - 10:19pm

I am 50/50 for I/E. Since both of my careers involve providing guidance and direction on subjects upon which I am supposed to be an "expert" it suits me well. :-)

Sorry guys, I jumped into the wrong boat! While the INT really clicked, the P really completes my picture. Not sure how I missed that one. Now, on to change my mind and join the indecisive group :)

Sat, 10/31/2009 - 10:39am

That little P/J difference is pretty large. Better us than ISFJs, though! :-)

Sat, 10/31/2009 - 5:37pm

Yeah. I didn't go back and check my results. The part about being into ideas, systems oriented and a workhorse sounded right. Systems and ideas seem common to both the J's and P's.

Sat, 10/31/2009 - 5:54pm

No worries, Donovan. You're always welcome here!

Sun, 11/01/2009 - 7:49pm

Yes I'll second that- don't go Donovan.
You can add your (P)erspective.

Mon, 11/02/2009 - 3:44am

We're nice people even if we like to keep to ourselves :) You're totally invited to join in the discussions!

INTJs: give me some proposals for a group avatar. Image URLs will be helpful. Who is the most recognizable or photogenic INTJ?

Thu, 10/29/2009 - 3:21pm

Thomas Jefferson

Thu, 10/29/2009 - 9:18pm

Here's a good list http://www.typelogic.com/intj.html. Although I'm going to suggest passing on Hannibal Lecter!

Fri, 10/30/2009 - 9:02am

Sir Isaac Newton. I like the jpg at http://www.biographyonline.net/scientists/images/newton.jpg since it shows him holding a prism and the resulting color spectrum. Need to give attribution to the source of the photo though.

Fri, 10/30/2009 - 9:27am

C. Montgomery Burns!
(I'm just an avid simpsons fan, that's all)

Fri, 10/30/2009 - 12:12pm

So, Ryan, I suppose "The Emperor" from Star Wars wouldn't be your first choice, either. ;-)

Fri, 10/30/2009 - 3:23pm

Dave, I am pleasantly surprised to know that TJ was an INTJ. On my trip to DC, it was the person I was/am most inspired by. It all makes sense now... thanks for sharing that.

Tue, 11/03/2009 - 10:52am

Do we have any more candidates or a winner?

Who's a good partner for INTJ's? Is it the opposite ESFP?

Sun, 10/11/2009 - 6:05pm

DB and I are both INTJs but have learned to complement each other with our different backgrounds and skills sets. Others?

Sun, 10/11/2009 - 6:16pm

Typelogic says INFJ, but "humanitarian idealist" does not sound like my ideal partner.

Fri, 10/23/2009 - 8:36pm

Agree with with Albert on this one! The F in INFJs drives me nuts!

Wed, 10/28/2009 - 11:24am

My husband and I are both INTJs, so we rarely find anything to disagree about. However, when we do, each of us is certain of being right...

Why do INTJ's love to write?

Sun, 10/11/2009 - 6:01pm

For me, writing is a way to integrate the world into my internal system (and we're all about the systems).

Sun, 10/11/2009 - 6:17pm

Writing is also a great pass-time for introverts who had *views*.

Sun, 10/11/2009 - 6:17pm

Writing means I don't have to report to anyone and can get lost in details. I also write for fun, because it provides some clarity

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 10:12am

I'm beginning to see a trend with Jessica and Mehnaz. I love to write because it provides a means of synthesizing all the complexities stirring around in my heart and mind. I always get a sense of satisfaction from finding clarity.

Thu, 10/29/2009 - 4:36pm

Nicely synthesised Donovan. I think you have hit the nail on the head.

Thu, 10/29/2009 - 6:57pm

Thanks Heather. I guess that makes four of us! I've known I am an INTJ for some time now, but this group is really giving me a deeper appreciation for what that means.

Biggest Pet Peeves, INTJs?

Sat, 09/26/2009 - 10:38am

Watching other people surf the web and not use quickest path possible... basically, anything that's not the shortest, most efficient way.

Wed, 09/30/2009 - 8:08am

People wasting my time by forcing me into badly designed systems. On good weeks, I can fight to fix the system. On bad weeks, I kvetch :-D.

Thu, 10/01/2009 - 2:27pm

I'm not a fan of long winded meandering tales- I'd rather just people just get to the point quickly

Wed, 10/07/2009 - 6:55pm

I wish you could edit your reply after posting it- I meant to say I'd rather people got to the point quickly

Wed, 10/07/2009 - 6:57pm

I'm personally big on time. Efficiency, respecting my time (people who show up late are dead to me) and I agree about the long stories too!

Fri, 10/09/2009 - 11:22am

I concur to everything posted here already, and add people who don't follow through on something they've agreed to do

Mon, 10/19/2009 - 7:20am

I'd like to add change for the sake of change- unless it makes things better, what's the point?

Mon, 10/19/2009 - 8:34pm

Poorly designed interfaces make me hysterical. Not only are they frustrating to use, but there's no excuse for bad interface design!

Mon, 10/19/2009 - 11:13pm

People who do things just for the sake of money, time or other things that only exist as constructs of man, to the exclusion of things that man truly needs.

Sun, 01/17/2010 - 10:49pm

Oh, and people that think their time is more important than mine. Get over yourselves already. I may only have 5 minutes left on this...
