International Humanitarian Assistance

This is a group specifically geared towards those building a career in the International Development and Humanitarian Assistance field. We often fall between the classification cracks of nonprofit and government jobs.

Those of us who concern ourselves with helping those less fortunate in developing countries know how hard it is to break into this sector - do you join Peace Corps? When do you go to Graduate school? Should I work for a foundation or a USAID implementing partner... How can I get that program manager job helping Ghanaian women entrepreneurs? Hopefully this can be a useful space for you.

Mehul Kar I'm looking for some research showing how many people say they WANT to donate/volunteer/make a difference towards global poverty, and how many ACTUALLY take action. Any help??

Mehul Kar: I'll look all these soon. Thank you for your responses. If you come across any articles, please forward them on!

You will find only how many people actually give to certain poverty fighting charities, and even at that it would not necessarily be accurate, as much poverty fighting comes from organizations that are not necessary touted as fighting poverty organizations but as start up support to sustainable businesses and so on.

"good intentions is not enough" is a great blog if you are looking for a place to start, also "find what works"

Shaina Sorrell Devex is having a webinar: "Starting Your Career in International Aid and Development.” It's on Dec 8th and is open to Devex members. I've got a profile on the site but haven't committed to a paid membership yet. This webinar may be the push I need to just do it... Is anyone else a Devex member? Have you found your membership worthwhile?

Especially when you can always find out enough about the restricted access jobs to look them up elsewhere for free. If you do decide to take the plunge I'd love to hear your feedback.

Shaina Sorrell Hi all! Just joined the group and after scanning through some of the discussions, looks like some of us are still up-and-coming to the aid/dev field. Glad I'm not the only one! If any other newbies are looking for expert advice on breaking into this line of work, there's a newsletter out there by Alanna Shaikh, one of my favorite bloggers/intl aid professionals. Personally, her advice has already been well worth the $2/month. Check it out, let me know what y'all think! http://bit.ly/9ev6bj

Uchechi Anyanwu: Can you explain how it's been worth it to you? And would you say it is worth it to someone not yet "up-and-coming", but wants to be?

You can write to her with a specific question related to your goals/job search. For me, it’s been useful in pinpointing skills one might want to highlight to potential employers, as well as helping to identify gaps in experience that should be addressed before applying to certain types of positions. The author also presents feedback that she gets from other professionals in this field, for instance when their advice contradicts what she's recommended. Since there are lots of people writing in with questions, it’s a chance to learn from the group's experience, as we're all essentially pursuing a similar path.

Stacyann Forrester Hi Everyone, I'm writing to request your help in putting together a series of interviews for my blog. The series will highlight young professionals who were born in Latin America and the Caribbean(LAC) but now call the US home. I'm interesting in learning about life in LAC countries from a native's perspective. This would also be a great opportunity to highlight your own blog as well. Contact me if you're interested and/or for further details.
