TOP IDEA: Edward Antrobus In an effort to be more of a full-serve, one-stop shop, I've expanded my ebook file conversion service into a full-blown e-publisher. Not only will SEAM Publishing convert your files to ebook files capable of being read on the Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc, but now I will list them for you on Amazon & Barnes & Noble as well! Please check out http://www.seampublishing to tell me what you think of the site I put together for this project. Thanks.

Megan Atkinson Web-based start ups like LinkedIn (holy IPO!) and Groupon are dominating the VC world right now leaving clean tech start-ups desperate to keep their heads above water. http://wp.me/p1kAA3-7I Is it just me or are there others that are kind of perplexed at so much money flying at coupons, social networking, etc while our energy infrastructure is suffering immensely? Do you feel this priority paradox is strictly financial or indicative of our society's innate ability to ignore important change?

Meanwhile, Groupon has been consistently pulling in close to $100m/month, and LinkedIn has 100m users. VC's want a return, and currently 'Green Tech' is either too cute (as Bill Gates has said), or is too expensive to fund.

Sam Rye I've been away from Brazen for awhile, but it's been because I've been attending conferences and doing a lot of research into Social Enterprise/Innovation. I'm inspired frankly - and interested to know what you've all been up to - whether it be working / researching / just noticing Social Ent/Innov in your communities. Can you give me examples? Almost half-way done and an incredible experience so far.

Sam- thanks for the great link to check out. I'm from Toronto and interested in staying in the social enterprise field but unsure of the current opportunities and ventures in Canada, since many social businesses are located in developing countries.

Does anyone have additional tips/resources to check out for a recent graduate looking to get into the social business field in Canada?

Sort of a Q&A strategy. If a specific team in encountering a problem, or has a strategy for success they should be encouraged to share it, and this way people can comment and perhaps, help solve a roadblock like issue, or offer suggestions on process, etc. Since most likely, problems and successes have been encountered on varying levels and degrees by specific teams and offices.

I did discover recently that we have access to Chatter through Salesforce and it looks like it could really meet our needs well.
@Lia, I am currently working on a project kind of in line with your comments. I'm compiling a sustainability field manual that all offices can use to implement different systems. We did a survey of offices and what they felt they implemented successfully in 2010 and then asked each office to write a how-to guide to duplicate their efforts in other offices. We'll be posting it on our intranet for all to use. My problem is how to get offices to use it and get engaged in taking more steps this year. We held a reduce/reuse/recycle competition last year and this year everyone's enthusiasm has fizzled.

Edward Antrobus Okay, I'll bite on this incubation concept. I have a business concept that I've been toying with for about 4 months now. An online, self-education college. Basically, testing to earn (eventually) college credit, so you can put that subject you learned on your own in the education heading of your resume. Obviously, I'm not qualified to create or grade tests for most of the subjects that could be covered under such a program, plus I would need help with the website, back-end, marketing, etc.

Experience is the other side of the coin, which I have been looking at alternative forms of gaining experience as well, including volunteering.

I hadn't heard of The Open University before, although they are accredited in the US, apparently. They seem to be the same concept as University of the People, just more progressed. At the end of the day, however, they are all just traditional distance-learning schools. My concept differs in that I take out the school's responsibility for PROVIDING the education which is where most of the cost comes in. By providing only the testing/certifying of the knowledge, I can provide a degree for a fraction of the cost.

Education recognition was the primary idea behind the idea. Of course, recognition is only important to me to the extent that it opens the door to a job. Beyond that, recognition isn't a high priority for me; in fact, in most cases, I'd rather just do what needs to be done without seeking recognition of it.
I also recognized that there is a gap in between traditional education and self-education that has not been exploited.

The beauty of my plan is that it isn't an either/or of doing this or getting a job. Once the systems are in place and somebody else is responsible for marketing, the school would require only take a couple hours of week per person.

Coming from corporate america I think if you put self taught material under Education it would raise questions, however, if you put it under its own category on the resume it would raise it's worth. Example: I went to Stanford and I want to hire some one who has on their resume that their education was on line. I will question that. But if there was a seperate section on the resume for self taught & tested accomplishments i would think that person was cool and innovative. I dont think people are willing to accept a major shift away from traditional education (thats where a lot of technical info is learned)but I think its a great idea as a supplement to an ongoing education

Edward Antrobus I'm trying to figure out the pricing structure for by ebook formatting business. Which do you think is best? 1)$25 per book plus a per page fee for manuscripts over 50 pages. That fee would be $.50 for pages 51-100 and $.25 for pages 101+. 2)$20/50 pages. 3)$5 per book plus a per page fee of $.50 for first 100 pages and $.25 for pages 100+ If an author had more than one book to convert, they would pay the per book fee (for options 1 & 3) and the page fee would be for everything.

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm really happy to hear C2C has been part of your vocab for awhile; sadly I've only just become aware of it properly (been planting trees for the last 4 years - not much more C2C than that!) but I'm interested as to how I can adopt it into the business I'm working with for the creative team.

I've had a look around on the C2C portal but I'd love it if you have any hints/tips on good articles to read / who I should talk to about adopting it into product design / how it can lead design thinking as an ideology?

Really interested in how it can be developed into other industries as well as architecture too - social enterprises and the like - bringing it into realms of 'mass consumption' to drive a wedge into the unsustainable habits of the human race...

I've scanned your resume, it's impressive that you've actually spent time on the "front lines" so to say. Cradle to Cradle is specifically meant for products, so as such my contact with it has been through product manufacturers. I think Steelcase is really on the forefront of environmental movement as a manufacturer and through its company culture as well. They have a learning section on their website, check it out: http://www.steelcase.com/en/company/sustainability/pages/share-learn.aspx. For an example of a smaller company that's been an innovator with C2C, check out Mechoshade - my copy of C2C actually came from them, it's a small family-owned business and it brings a new perspective on how window shading affects human environment, www.mechoshade.com. They also love talking about it so feel free to contact them directly. Finally, if you are looking to apply environmental principles to the built environment (company offices for example), check out LEED, www.usgbc.org.
All of these have their pluses and minuses but just being aware of possiblities and implementing some of the principles gets us ahead on living better and more sustainably.
