TOP IDEA: Josh Allan Dykstra I've noticed a trend lately where more and more HR/OD people are being shifted to consultant roles instead of being FTEs. I'm actually excited about this, as to me it's an indication that we have an opportunity to completely replace HR with something entirely new and much more effective. Are you seeing any companies that are building new "people" constructs that don't look like "HR?" (Read all my thoughts here, if you like: "It's Time For HR To Die" http://bit.ly/kO0AX8.)

Would love to hear your thoughts on recruiting and how we can make it better -- that's a pretty interesting world in itself. I've been on the "other side" of recruitment a number of times and it (generally speaking, of course) seems to be a pretty de-humanizing process. To me, that just screams "perfect opportunity to build something new!"

Josh Allan Dykstra I think we're all pretty aware that the "job hunting" process can be pretty de-human-izing (in a very real sense) and maybe even toxic. But what do we do about it? I've written a bit about my thoughts at the attached link (http://wp.me/p9H4b-3x), but I'd love to hear what you all have learned/noticed/etc. Any great ideas on what we can do to make this process better?

This makes me feel like I have a little more control over the process - if no job offer comes up, it what is for the best for me as well as for them. Interestingly, I've had several "non offers" but am still in contact with those firms because though that particular position wasn't the right fit for me, I liked the people and want to just stay in touch over the long term.

Madeleine Lethaby Hey fellow Careerists! I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Facebook "Like" promotions. One of my clients is trying to increase their fan base on FB and Twitter so were thinking of creating a competition (1 yr program with a personal trainer) where people needed to click "like" to enter and encourage their friends to as well. The more friends who enter, the better chance of winning. SO MY QUESTION TO YOU: is this an effective or ineffective way to build a fan base and create loyalty?

Yes, we do have a communication plan in place once we have loaded the contest. It'll include a bunch of content rich blog entries, videos, and guest contributors in regular bursts.

We have also appointed a Community Manager who will be monitoring comments/interations across all our channels (twitter, FB, blog, website, Youtube, etc) and will be highly engaged, personal, friendly and helpful!

We will have a really nifty FB app which contestants will load when entering the comp. The app will track 'likes' and friend's 'likes' which is simple to monitor.

Thanks!

Josh Allan Dykstra Anyone else been following the Google/Verizon chatter? I'm happy to share both my take (which is, of course, very personal) and some expert opinion - in two flavors, low and high brow.

First, the primer: Anup Shah, over on Global Issues, does a good job of presenting the basics of a monopoly by vertical integration problem. http://www.globalissues.org/article/159/media-conglomerates-mergers-conc...

For those of use who prefer our truth as the gut-wrenching center of a madcap video, no one explains it quite as well as the great Lloyd Kaufman, head of Troma films: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=450...

My take: Among all the things I do, I'm a writer for independent films. The three projects I finally have in production, well, I'd like to be able to someday get paid for them and others. Not that I feel a sense of entitlement, that I deserve to make it as an independent artist...but right now, there's a level playing field. If I can put good product on the web, if I can use networks and social media to market that work and build an audience...I have a chance. And that's worth fighting for, I think. A fair chance.

Andrew Shell According to Thomas Thurston as a startup you are 30 to 40 percent more likely to survive with a disruptive strategy which he defines as cheaper and worse in performance then the existing competition. http://bit.ly/9SCRXk What do you think of his “Lower cost, lower performance, and gets better over time” strategy?

I personally think the 37Signals approach would ultimately be more effective, both for sales and brand building, than what's described in the article (low performance low cost). Esp low cost. Pricing, to me, is probably the most difficult to determine.

Eg: Don't focus on doing everything. Focus on making 1 or 2 core features super simple, intuitive, and super helpful. If you can get people in the door doing those, then you can begin to slowly build your product out more and get even more people in the door because you can rely on your core being kickass.

You gotta be very careful to ID what your product is *really* about and what its *true* competition and target is. In my experience (I'm the guy that does this for people), founders/engineers sometimes have a hard time with this.

Basically, you're best off by appealing to nonconsumers, at least at first. In the above example, people who would never dream of buying MS Project (and here's the challenge: they probably don't know MS Project exists, or could exist, and they are pretty technologically inept...let's go ahead and say profoundly inept).

I urge and exhort everyone on this thread to read Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey Moore. This is a foundational model of technology sales that should be taken into account by anyone trying to wrestle a startup into being. Nathan, you're right: pricing is very tricky. But there's a lot of frameworks and research on this out there...check it out, starting with Moore.

TOP IDEA: Tariq West What is it with girls and taking pictures all the time? It seems like every girl I know has a cute, compact digital camera - most of them canon and many of them pink. Young women seem to tirelessly document their social lives - from randomly trying on outfits to sleepover antics to conspicuously posed party pics. I suspect there is a strong tie-in here with Facebook as a sharing medium, but could really use some help getting my head around it. More here: http://bit.ly/aaMNUw

TOP IDEA: Andrew Shell IDEA: An author releases a couple free pdf ebooks. For their next book they say “I hope you liked my free books. I’d like to create another, but I need to support myself. I will run a fund raising event for the next month to pay for the book. My target is $5000. Here is the paypal button and if you donate money you’ll be included on a thank you page in the book.” Ideally people donate money, you produce another ebook that you put on your site for free

@Jamie Do you have any examples of how this has worked in the EDU industry?

@Andrew I agree, if you release a couple free then people know what to expect quality wise.

What about combating piracy by being personal? In general, I think if people feel like they are interacting with a person they are less likely to pirate something because it feels like "the author needs this to live on". If they feel like they are interacting with a company then they don't feel so bad. If you buy a CD from Best Buy or Amazon you realize that the artist isn't seeing money from that sale, or if they are it's a tiny percent.

Sabrina Morris I think, Social Networking is changing the face of advertisement as well as public alerts. I also would like to see Government integrate Social networking websites with legislation in real time so the public can be aware of bills before they are passed and enforced. Daniel Sunshine Here is a process that we can apply to our projects. Please share your thoughts. Step 1: Identify different topics Step 2: Find teams of 2-4 that are interested in specific topics (Team roles include: researcher, writer, editor and possibly presentation creator/designer - One person can play many roles, but idealy the writer and editor will be unique.) Step 3: Create milestones, meeting times and a timeline for the project. Step 4: Research Step 5: Write Step 6: Edit Step 7: Post
