INFJ

As an INFJ, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you take things in primarily via intuition. Your secondary mode is external, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit with your personal value system.

INFJs are gentle, caring, complex and highly intuitive individuals. Artistic and creative, they live in a world of hidden meanings and possibilities. Only one percent of the population has an INFJ Personality Type, making it the most rare of all the types. (Personality Page.com)

Ty Unglebower Introverts tend to require higher stakes before taking certain actions, such as random networking, approaching strangers, talking up at meetings. While many people engage in these activities simply because they can, or because they get a rush from them, the introvert needs a reason. And "because it's there" is not sufficient. My blog post on the subject goes further. http://bit.ly/jY3iJC

Ty Unglebower We know that introverts have played a large role in society and history. But despite that knowledge we still tend to advise people to be extroverted as a means to success. That initiative is rewarded, and extroverts show it more often. Of course this is false. Extroverts shows extroverted initiative more often. But what about introvert initiative? How can introverts connect with the big guns without being extroverted? I tell you how, and it's so obvious it's funny. http://bit.ly/kL3mR2

Ty Unglebower I saw the movie, "The King's Speech". An excellent film by every metric. But one reason I liked it was that I related to the plight of the protagonist on a personal level. Not because I am royal of course, but because I feel I have been held back at times from my potential greatness by things that are beyond my own control. In fact I think that is one reason why the movie has become so popular. Many people identify with this problem. I expand on this here. http://bit.ly/eHWIgr

Miki Markovich If for some reason you’ve missed the myriad of articles, all you have to do is look around to know that marketing has really changed in last few years. Customers now want to see the people behind the business, the process. There is now a tight rope to walk between professional and personal. I’m happy to be a part of the transition as I’ve always been a little too transparent (and a little too idealistic) for real life://www.shymarketingsecrets.com/changes-in-attitudes-changes-in-marketing

Miki Markovich Ever dream of having your own business, but believe you're too shy to successfully market? We know that networking, meaning meeting new people, is important. Shy people, however, may cringe at the thought of these interactions even though they know many of these people are absolutely wonderful, fabulous really. Well, it is time to dance for joy because innovation is making work life easier for the shy: http://www.shymarketingsecrets.com/three-tech-innovations-for-shy-people...

Ellen A. Feldman I see this topic below but I thought I'd create another post. I had an interview this week, & when asked my weakness said that I could be shy but this does not mean I'm not confident. She told me I did come across as being a little reserved and shy, and I needed to brag about myself more. I felt like I bragged about myself quite a bit. She even told my references I came across as being reserved or shy and asked did that affect my performance? My question is: WHAT is wrong with being reserved?

Oh, many will say that to be so means you will get eaten up in the business world, and that they only way to succeed is to change who you are. I don't buy that wholesale. I think we have to work on some things to succeed in some ways. But the notion that quieter people cannot succeed anywhere is in my view an unfortunate myth. (I blog about this stuff all the time...you may identify with some of the things I say there.)

I notice that while I am shy in new situations, once I get used to it, I am very friendly. One issue is that the American culture is very extroverted, so people seem to value extroversion and not introversion. What I have learned for myself is that I do better in jobs that allow me to just be me, where my "reserved" way is seen as valuable not as an obstacle. So my question is more about the person who interviewed you and the organization-why would she think that someone who was extroverted would excel more at that job?

There is not much to tell. I am 50, self employed, and working on a Ph.D., which is going very slow at the moment. I have known for a long time that I am an INFJ. Like Scott, however, I am close to the line with the J so it changes to P occasionally. It depends on what skill set life is requiring me to use at any particular moment. I joined because it looked like and interesting group to be a part of.

Hi Alyea and group.
I am 37 years old, and live in Orlando FL.
I have known I am an IN-- for a long time. The F part I have come to accept and the J can flip to P depending on what test I take. Still trying to figure things out I guess.

Abigael Escobal Hi INFJs! Recently I had an interview that I thought I did well in but ended up not getting the job, which was disappointing. My fiance suggested that maybe I wasn't as outgoing, even though I had full confidence in what I said. How do you handle interviews as an INFJ? Do you care to share any tips? Do you fake outgoing-ness?

I am also pretty comfortable with kids considering that I have been a substitute teacher since 2007. I just felt that if I was more "bubbly" that maybe I would have gotten a chance.

Sometimes jobs already have someone in mind for the position and interview everyone to show due diligence. For example, they may have hired a teacher assistant that was already working in the school. So if you prepared for the interview, felt you did well and you were personable, then you were successful! Even if the outcome was not the expected.

Alan Jarman Thanks Alyea. I've known that I was an INFJ for some years but I have recently started "connecting" with it. My company has embraced "Strengths Based" leadership and it is amazing how these various tests confirm our make up.

Alyea Sandovar Wow, its so great to have this discussion. Feels like I am talking to my peers. I too have a way of "knowing" what is happening in the room, what people are feeling, and I get a sense of the overall picture. Not good with details either. I integrate information through my senses. And there are not too many jobs that can actually utilize our way of being. It's so great to connect with others in this way!

Its not just knowing what people are feeling and being able to engage with them but I also get a sense of their history. I can look at someone's face and just know whether they have had a hard life, what kinds of things they might struggle with, who they are, who they pretend to be, why they act the way they do...Its quite uncanny and I think this type of observing is common to INFJs

Abigael Escobal I think one way being INFJ affects me positively is that I know how people think and feel without them necessarily telling me. I tend to do a lot of thinking and reflecting on what I can do to be better at my job.

Dawn Burrow I have an uncanny ability to just "know" others or understand them without them saying much. I know that I am unfulfilled and searching when I am in a position that does not fulfill my personal beliefs. I have a visionary view on life and do not like details.

Alyea Sandovar Welcome Mallory, Erick, Erin, Abigael, Michael, Ellen, Charles, Dawn, Linsay--our group has grown quite a bit in the last month hooray!!! Did I miss anyone? Great to have you all! Thanks Abigael for that great question-what about, how does being INFJ affect you at work? Does it affects what careers you choose or do you feel it simply affects how you do work? Mallory touched on it, but would love to hear from others too!

I'm an INFJ and career coach who just went through the interview process last year. Most people in my field are ENFP's.

I interview quite well because I spend a lot of time preparing and gathering information. I use the standard "strengths & weaknesses" question to address my characteristics as an INFJ. I think employers appreciate the honesty. It helps them understand that we can do the same jobs extroverts can-- we just need time to prepare and recharge!

I find that in terms of interviews, I can speak more clearly and self reflect on who I am and how I will behave at work. And I think people appreciate that in an interview. We do not need to change who we are. We are sociable after all. We just orient internally first then externally. I also get very shy picking up the phone. I hate it! Unless I know the person on the other end. So thats something Im working on. I like networking but cold calling is not for me. Others?
