Horror Movie Buffs

If you're into the horror movie genre, this group of special people is right up your alley.

Let's talk old-school and new-school, cheese-ball and totally serious ... I love them all and can't get enough.

Except for the ones that suck. But we can debate about those too.

Network Leader: Ryan Paugh

Vanessa Alvarado I urge anyone who hasn't seen 2009's "Grace" to do so. It's unique, thought provoking, & disturbing like good horror films should be. A good look at the "horrors" of human instinct and the female machine.

Nice visuals but too predictable and not campy enough to be really funny, either. About as scary as an episode of "Goosebumps".

Ryan Paugh: @Vanessa -- I watched Grace this weekend with my girlfriend and I was thoroughly disturbed ... the last scene ... I'm NEVER having kids now :)

Vanessa Alvarado I finally saw the 80s classic "Fright Night". It has moved up among the ranks for my top favorite horror flicks. It has something for everyone, it's made of fun!

Ryan Paugh: I'm adding it to my Netflix list. Looks awesome!

I liked the idea of a vampire actor hunting real vampires. Also watched the sequel that sucked like a vacuum (sorry).

Jill Watched "The Children" last night - bad title for a good movie. There are so many creepy things about children! Especially sick children.

Emily Jasper: I've been a nanny and day care teacher, and yeah, kids can be creepy...

Emily Jasper I'm looking for suggestions on Takashi Miike movies. Have seen: Ichi the Killer, Audition, and Gozu, plus some shorts from Three Extremes and Masters of Horror: Imprint. Thanks!

I started watching them because you get a lot of variety you're not wasting tons of time on (they're mostly 53 min). Some have been better than mainstream flicks!

Vanessa Alvarado I forgot "Alone in the Dark" which was also on the Weekend Movie Roster. This is the worst video game movie ever made; so bad it ties with “Mortal Kombat Annihilation”. I fell asleep twice trying to finish watching it- yet I'd rather watch a marathon of this movie than watch any of the abysmal "Resident Evil" adaptations.

Jovovich rocked pretty hard in the first one (haven't seen 2 or 3) and the Red Queen was a nice touch. What did you dislike so much about it?

I avoided "Alone in the Dark" because I loved the game as a kid and still can't wrap my head around the casting choices of Christian Slater AND Tara Reid.

It’s a huge insult to all involved in the “Resident Evil” movies that I would say “Alone in the Dark” is superior-so I won’t. I’m simply extremely biased. I'm a nerdy proponent of the Resident Evil video game series so I can't accept all of the changes made for the movies, particularly when the original video game has an linear plot that imitates B Horror movies.

Vanessa Alvarado Anyone enjoy horror during their long weekend. I started with "Tales from the Darkside". I thought "Jennifer's Body" was horrible but it was easily topped by "Die Hard Dracula"- it's the worst movie ever made. Ever. "The Tatooist" played it straight and was good for what it was and "Zombie Land" was fun, perfect for us Resident Evil Survival Horror video game nerds.

Isao Kato Saw the indie apocalypse flick "Carriers" and I thought it was terrific. The low-budget restriction shows (no Tom Savini-esque makeup), but the best thing is that the film focuses on our dignity and bonding, AFTER doing what mainstream movie never does - abandoning "attractive" people, killing friends and siblings, all in order to survive. Carriers might not be the most frightening post-apocalypse flick but it is the most realistic.

Vanessa Alvarado: I love how indie films aren't afraid to slink into the real human "Heart of Darkness" - this sounds like an interesting flick.

Vanessa Alvarado Anyone seen "Baghead"? The lack of focused camera work irked me a bit (although it likely added to it's indie charm) but I thought it was a hilarious and simple horror film satire. I nabbed a copy at many of the going-out-of-business-sales at Blockbuster this weekend for $1.00.

Vanessa Alvarado FRIDAY THE 13TH- who's watching horror this weekend? What are you tuning into? Any suggestions?

116 weeks ago from Horror Movie Buffs

Adam Raviart: I agree. Jason isn't very interesting.

Cheila Esquilin: Hey Ryan, I saw "Drag me to hell" this weekend. It was pretty jumpy but reminded me of nightmare on elms st. Ha!

Jill Just watched "House of the Devil" last night. For a movie filmed in 2008, they did a great job creating that 80s vibe. From the costume, camera angles, props, to hair and make up, it really felt authentic. And a lot of good scares. Worth the rental on xbox live.

Vanessa Alvarado: That sounds perfect, I'll have to check it out!

Vanessa Alvarado I found a Surreal/Black Comedy horror movie called "Parents" this weekend. It was very creative & unique. Set in the 50s with extraordinary attention to detail. Needed tighter editing, but I still dug it. Anyone else seen it?

117 weeks ago from Horror Movie Buffs

Vanessa Alvarado: Some scenes dragged on to long & the plot needed to be more engaging (plot, what plot?) but I liked the black comedy aspect of it.

The dark tone, odd subject matter and menacing Randy Quaid made it one of my fav cult films. Not to mention the offbeat soundtrack which introduced me to "Cerezo Rosa" by Perez Prado.

Sadly, not a lot of people have seen this quirky movie.

Vanessa Alvarado Watched “Night of the Demons” & “Night of the Demons 2”. In a word, hilarious. Both movies feature a tube of grotesque, demonic lipstick. In the second film a nun suits up to fight demons armed with a ruler and a super soaker filled with holy water. Yes.

I love the scene with possessed Angela dancing to Stigmata Martyr by the Bauhaus. However cheezy and stereotype-filled it is, somehow it just works perfectly. Second one was not my cup of tea, just pure cheeziness with little attempt to actually be horror. Different writer and director, as well.

Can't comment on Paranormal..yet, but for shear edge of seat claustrophobic terror check out 'The Descent'. From 'Dog Soldiers' director.

119 weeks ago from Horror Movie Buffs

Vanessa Alvarado: The claustrophobic atmosphere in The Decent was amazing. I could view it alone w/ no problem. But I would NOT watch Paranormal alone at 3AM.

Ryan Paugh: I watched The Descent for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Gotta agree!

Vanessa Alvarado Saw "Trick 'R Treat" this weekend and LOVED it. Anthology w/ a Creep Show/Tales From the Darkside Vibe. Fun, creative, dark & retro.

119 weeks ago from Horror Movie Buffs

: Grabbed a copy of this, looking forward to it. Thanks for the tip!

Vanessa Alvarado: Let me know if you enjoy it, if you liked "Creep Show" it will be hard not to like "Trick 'R Treat" with its intentional comic book look.

Cheila Esquilin Has anyone seen "Paranormal activity"? I'm about to see it this weekend. I so stoked and scared at the same time!

121 weeks ago from Horror Movie Buffs

Vanessa Alvarado: Saw it! Subtle, relied on the power of the implied. I will never watch it home alone in the dark. Mission accomplished, movie! Dug it.
Cheila Esquilin: I saw it and I was able to sleep, at least. Maybe because I saw it with a group of friends. Who else saw it?

Vanessa Alvarado Watched "Scream" for the first time in years this weekend. Not as good as I remembered it. Obvious adults playing teenagers hurts...

121 weeks ago from Horror Movie Buffs

Neal Jansons: I recently rewatched it, too, but enjoyed it more. I really liked how the slasher tropes got subverted and turned on themselves.
Vanessa Alvarado: It succeeds greatly as a comedy, fails as horror. I still like it in all it's break-the-3rd-wall glory, a treat for horror fans.

Ryan Paugh Paranormal Activity - Has anyone seen this? Finally saw a commercial last night, but want to hear some reviews from the experts.

Emily Jasper: I just saw an ad, and it looks like a movie you want to watch the audience in, some funny reactions

Neal Jansons: It has gotten awesome reviews and did really well in its indie distribution. I want to see it.
