Highly Sensitive People (HSPs)

According to the work of research psychologist, Dr. Elaine Aron (www.hsperson.com), 20% of humans and animals are born with highly sensitive *nervous systems* that wire us to process more data more thoroughly. There are gifts and challenges with this inherited, neurophysiological trait. If you felt drawn to the name of this group -- if you immediately resonated with the term -- that's an intuitive clue that you are probably part of the 20% of the population that are highly sensitive.

If you're into metaphors, we are very similar to cat-whiskers, antenna, or radar/sonar satellites... picking up every kind of subtlety and nuance.

If you're into empirical evidence, here's a 3-minute video of Dr. Aron describing the basics of the trait:

Western culture is biased against sensitivity. This bias strongly impacts (and sometimes hinders) the career development of HSPs, hence the creation of this BC group: to serve as a means of online discovery, empowerment and connection for Sensitives in the workplace.

Cheryl Lynn Morris Years ago, I went to an allergist because I can't wear wool against my skin and I wanted to find a cure. After I described how wool causes my skin to itch, the allergist said, "You have a 'mechanical allergy' to wool--not a chemical allergy to wool. If you look at wool fibers under the microscope, the fibers look like tiny barbed wire." He told me that there is no cure, just don't wear wool.

Erika Harris HSPs tend to desire and seek MEANING in our work. One of the best and largest databases of people and organizations working toward social justice, indigenous rights and environmental stewardship is WiserEarth: http://www.wiserearth.org/
