Megan Atkinson FOX TV released some cast videos via shows (i.e. House MD, Bones) on Facebook in spirit of Earth Day coming up. Idea: to have all of our 15+ offices compile videos featuring staff sharing their favorite "factoids" about eco-friendly things like recycling, saving energy, composting, etc. We could then have the executive team choose their favorite video and the winner would receive the company's annual environmental stewardship core value award. Your thoughts - fun, cheesy? http://bit.ly/eBVFwJ

Most often when we aren't being eco friendly its not because we are don't care but its the inertia of habit. How about giving your staff a week to do something i.e apply their favorite factoid?
Some examples would be:
Measuring the savings from turning off lights or altering the thermostats for a week.
Replacing lights with LED lamps.

Megan Atkinson I'm in charge of employee engagement for our corporate sustainability committee. I'd really like to utilize the power of social media to get staff/offices across the country to get talking, sharing, and moving. Can anyone push me in a direction to get started on this kind of initiative? I'm not sure where to start.

Sort of a Q&A strategy. If a specific team in encountering a problem, or has a strategy for success they should be encouraged to share it, and this way people can comment and perhaps, help solve a roadblock like issue, or offer suggestions on process, etc. Since most likely, problems and successes have been encountered on varying levels and degrees by specific teams and offices.

I did discover recently that we have access to Chatter through Salesforce and it looks like it could really meet our needs well.
@Lia, I am currently working on a project kind of in line with your comments. I'm compiling a sustainability field manual that all offices can use to implement different systems. We did a survey of offices and what they felt they implemented successfully in 2010 and then asked each office to write a how-to guide to duplicate their efforts in other offices. We'll be posting it on our intranet for all to use. My problem is how to get offices to use it and get engaged in taking more steps this year. We held a reduce/reuse/recycle competition last year and this year everyone's enthusiasm has fizzled.

Caroline What kinds of tactics do you use when promoting green business with social media? I'm interning with a company that is currently in a competition to crowdsource the required funds needed to attend a mentoring and networking event for social businesses, as a clever way of testing their entrepreneurial drive. Any tips for crowdsourcing using social media?

Successful crowdsourcing is about having a powerful story that people want to support and share. How can you best present that story? Ask the people you know well first to support it and get some momentum and then go out to the next large circle of people you know and so on and so forth.

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm really happy to hear C2C has been part of your vocab for awhile; sadly I've only just become aware of it properly (been planting trees for the last 4 years - not much more C2C than that!) but I'm interested as to how I can adopt it into the business I'm working with for the creative team.

I've had a look around on the C2C portal but I'd love it if you have any hints/tips on good articles to read / who I should talk to about adopting it into product design / how it can lead design thinking as an ideology?

Really interested in how it can be developed into other industries as well as architecture too - social enterprises and the like - bringing it into realms of 'mass consumption' to drive a wedge into the unsustainable habits of the human race...

I've scanned your resume, it's impressive that you've actually spent time on the "front lines" so to say. Cradle to Cradle is specifically meant for products, so as such my contact with it has been through product manufacturers. I think Steelcase is really on the forefront of environmental movement as a manufacturer and through its company culture as well. They have a learning section on their website, check it out: http://www.steelcase.com/en/company/sustainability/pages/share-learn.aspx. For an example of a smaller company that's been an innovator with C2C, check out Mechoshade - my copy of C2C actually came from them, it's a small family-owned business and it brings a new perspective on how window shading affects human environment, www.mechoshade.com. They also love talking about it so feel free to contact them directly. Finally, if you are looking to apply environmental principles to the built environment (company offices for example), check out LEED, www.usgbc.org.
All of these have their pluses and minuses but just being aware of possiblities and implementing some of the principles gets us ahead on living better and more sustainably.

Hi Rebecca,

I'm just getting started with it and we're still clarifying what our strategic social media goals are at work. I work at a co-working startup called the Hub and most of our members are made aware of events in the space through email, so I like the idea of being able to see how our email lists are using social media. I think it will give a nice layout of what platforms and campaigns would be most useful for building a strong presence in. It's giving a nice overview of who uses what.

One specific bit of information I plan to implement is integrating Linked-In in our plans to strengthen our presence. Simply because it was a network that showed up so consistently among folk who most consistently open our email.

Still experimenting with...a lot of things. So I'll keep you updated on how I maximize its use.

Ryan Paugh Everything that's going on with BP seems to be getting messier. I've been following what's going on day after day and it seems like nobody can come up with a solid plan + there's a lot of contradicting going on. There's a great post today on Brazen that discusses whether or not a good PR team could help BP >> http://bit.ly/b2HgYF According to the blogger there's no PR team in the world that can help until they change how they operate as a company. Do you agree?

Things tend to stay status quo when everything is status quo. People need to be pushed the brink and see how bad things could be if they continue before real change can happen. So with how terrible this is perhaps something really wonderful will come out of it.

Ryan Paugh I got interviewed this morning by a reporter who wanted to discuss Generation Y's heightened interest in Parks & Recreation careers and other careers related to the environment, conservation and the outdoors. Do you think that this has to do with inherent Gen-Y traits or the opportunities made available to use through social media. Are we more idealistic, or just more connected?

The availability of green jobs has increased because of their social relevance. Also, I think Gen Y'ers may be more interested in the field (regardless of job availability) because we've been brought up under the pressure of "having to live with the mistakes of the past" and when the social relevance became more socially relevant, we were coming into the age(s) where we decide on a direction for our career.
