Nikita T. Mitchell I recently wrote a post called 3 Reasons Why Every Young Professional Should Serve on a Nonprofit Board (http://bit.ly/kxvmge). I'm now working on a follow-up post b/c of how many people have asked for advice in response, and I would love to know more about your experiences: Have you ever served on a nonprofit board? If yes, what advice do you have for other young professionals looking for such an opportunity. If no, why not?

I have yet to go forward with it because I am in transition right now, living at home until I find a full time position. I want it to be a short-term thing so I do not want to fully dedicate myself to something only to have to turn around and leave them.

I was giving my opinion as an individual user more than a web developer looking for issues that any user may have. I always try to keep in mind in any design work that there will always be a user somewhere who does not agree with my design choices, whether they be due to usability or personal preference. As someone who uses contacts and glasses myself, I felt the contrast on this site was enough that most users would not have a problem. However, I agree more contrast is always a better idea than lower contrast.

Jennifer Koren To anyone that works from home? Are you given guidelines by your employer on what they expect from you when you work from home? For instance, when I moved into my new place, the city decided to start tearing up our road and moving existing lines. I also live in the lightning capital of the world and have frequent visits by hurricanes. Things happen. My thought is supplying a back-up system for hourly distance workers wouldn't be very cost effective. I do think offering a simple incentive to the employees that if they need to be on call if needed, and make sure they know it's not going to be a frequent thing.

Tameem Qazi After reading a recent article on why job hoppers make good employees as opposed to those stuck at one place for a long time( unless they're doing exceptionally well), i agree job hopping does tend to boost your career. Spending 10 yrs in the same company myself, it was impossible to ignore the settling signs of stagnation, and the desperate urge to step out of the utopia to feel the challenge adrenaline rush inside you once again. Thus, complacency lost the battle.

Job hoppers make terrible employees. But let's put some meat on the term.

If someone says at a company for a few years and makes some changes over the years, that is just the nature of the employer - employee dynamic that has changed over the past few decades.

Someone that I define as a job hopper shows a track record of 1 - 2 years at each company across a long span of time. They have zero loyalty, are completely self-interested, work poorly with teams and bring little depth of content. A person has got to demonstrate that they have been able to succeed in the context of an organization over time and shown advancement.

They seem to stay for a few months, working on all the cool and interesting stuff, but when things get difficult, routine, dull or boring, they leave and are off to find the next project in the cool and interesting phase.

If you don't have the stamina and discipline to stick with finishing a project through to implementation and support, how can I be sure a job hopper is going to stick around when I really need them?

TOP IDEA: Aurian Campbell I find that in my industry there is a certain amount of business banter that must occur prior to being able to make a genuine business connection. As a mental aid for networking functions, I've come up with this idea of a "credibility threshold" (that I illustrate using a nerdy graph: http://bit.ly/hnP9xP) that I feel must be reached before valuable networking can occur. Does this happen in your industry? Do you have to prove you're worth listening to before you can network effectively?

If we're engaging in a good sales conversstion and they don't come off as arrogant and egotistical, when or if the conversation gets to a point where they may not know the answer I seek I may continue working with them recognizing their youth and inexperience. However, if their head is in the clouds and they come off like they know more and are wiser because youth has it while age doesn't, I will walk away either leave or avoid them. Respect is earned. If they earn my respect I will continue to work with them if I'm in a buying mood.

Thanks so much for your comments! It's something I've been thinking about a lot, so I really appreciate the feedback :-).

@Tom - I think you hit the nail on the head re: younger people - just be interested in learning and ask good questions. You raise a good point about audience, though, too. The credibility threshold for a client would be completely different than for a colleague, and I know I'd use different tactics for crossing the threshold with an engineer than I would with an exec. I suppose it comes back to the old "know your audience" adage.

@Linda - you are so right that attitude makes or breaks it. I've seen many and enthusiastic young professionals crash and burn when they are faced with more experienced professionals for just that reason. There is a fine line between confidence that allows you to engage with those more experienced than you, and arrogance that will turn them off entirely.

I observed over five years with my students that there are a lot of differences in body language, how to show respect in a different culture, intonation of voice and how to present your CV material.
