Ryan Paugh I'm going to an 80s party tomorrow night (who doesn't love a good 80s party?) and I need to find a costume. I want to go as an 80s rock legend. Any ideas? I'm running out of time ...

Doug Mitchell: As someone who was "around" in the 80's, I find it very funny the decade has become costume. I'd go in a DEVO yellow jumpsuit and laboratory goggles.

I actually think I hit the ragstock a little too close to Halloween so a lot of the usual goodness was already gone. What I ended up with is more or less Sammy Hagar or the lead singer from Whitesnake. Big, poof blonde hair. Tight, leather pants. Raggy, white tee with the sleeves cut off and an angel wing on the back. It's pretty good stuff actually ... can't wait for this party!

Carlos Tabora After reading today's featured post, http://www.brazencareerist.com/2010/06/23/your-online-persona-vs-the-rea..., it got me thinking. How much of your personal life do you share in your "online" persona? Do you try to keep things focused in one area only (i.e. - personal vs. professional)? If you feel that you are effectively able to combine all areas of your life into one "personal brand", what's your secret for doing it successfully?

Dannielle Blumenthal: Good morning - I am doing this but I don't have a plan. Just making it up as I go along. Seems OK so far. Good luck, DB

Dannielle Blumenthal Picked up Orange is the New Black in the bookstore. Unexpected Gen X memoir. Plot not important. What a great book about losing your way after college, trying to get back on track, and then getting completely messed up again, paying for your mistakes. I so recommend this book.

Dannielle Blumenthal what ever happened to Generation X? I never hear anyone use the term anymore.

The Gen X Connect Ning site has been overwhelmed by spammers, and I have no idea who controls the site--therefore I'll be here, but not there.

So it looks like the Gen X Connect domain has expired, but the Ning site is still there. Update your bookmarks accordingly!

Scott Palmer Hi all! Just wanted to add my GenX woes and hopes. In the last year I went from an invited guest at Obama's Inauguration to losing my marriage, 2 daughters, home, and career. All at 41y/o. Soon I may be homeless. With no formal education (as I learned photography as a trade), things are looking bleak. I am frantically trying to network here and elsewhere looking for hope, guidance and maybe an angel somewhere...Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...really.

Heather Conroy What is the potential impact or consequence of of a profile on this site for a Gen x-er? What are the rules for contributing?

Xers were criticized as bad and stupid in the 1980's. I remember well.

127 weeks ago from genXconnect members

GenerationXpert Suzanne Kart: Xers were also told that we would never own our houses - and yet we ended up buying earlier than the boomers did (adjusted for age).
: Xers proved elders wrong in a lot of things. Shaking off slacker. I can imagine Millennials proving adults about being spoiled.

Gen Xers as great entrepreneurs designed CareerBuilder and Myspace etc. Sites we Yers take for granted.

My whole job search is as hard as some Xers. I know how you Xers feel.

: @GenXpert Suzanne Kart: when do you think GenX ends? just curious?
GenerationXpert Suzanne Kart: Sorry @ the late response. I think Gen X ends 12/31/79 - therefore anyone born before 1980. If you born in the 60s or 70s, I say you're X.

Cara Pavelko What do you think is the greatest thing about being a Gen Xer? For me, it's my cynicism. It has made me a realist.

I think Gen Y and the Millennials are known for their attitude of entitlement. I keep feeling the need to explain workplace ettiquete and common courtesy to some our young workers. On a positive note, they do all get along very well, and want to be friends with everyone they work with, which is a pleasant change from the usual workplace back-stabbing.

Xers in my view tend to see themselves (ourselves) as "on my own," oppose the concept of authority, and tend to have a few trusted friends/family who have really got their back. Whereas Yers are more laid back, tend to have a lot more friends, and also prefer more direction. Millennials to me are like Yers on technology steroids. And Gen Yers and Boomers tend to get along very well at work. (I like Bruce Tulgan's books on the generations at work, they are very insightful and useful.)

Cara Pavelko Hey all, How does everyone feel about the attention GenY is getting in the workplace? Does it effect any of you?

135 weeks ago from genXconnect members

Heather Conroy: Yes despite temporary economic downturn things are improving and I'm beefiting from the changes they have made to the work place as well
