That is correct, Raquel. The original meaning was tied to immigrants who came here fleeing persecutions of various sorts. Here they could worship as they wished, be a minority and be free (so they thought) and for those who came from countries with royalties and caste systems, they could indeed rise above their current class by working hard in America.

That meaning, as someone alluded to in the discussion above, has since been perverted by Wall Street and Madison Avenue to mean "own a house and a car, have a dog and 2.5 kids."

The general consensus seems to be: it depends on the field. For fields where a Master's is a requirement for entry level positions, obviously it's the first step.

TOP IDEA: Tariq West The internet is a democratic space in the sense that web 2.0 tools have allowed for political expression, mobilization and direct action. It can be done in real time without servers. you create the space through the use of invitation, within that space you can exchange ideas, opinions, video, pics, create agenda and, plans. Yes I would agree we must deliberate to come to an agreeable or correct conclusion which may lead to a plan of action. This I believe will begin with Web 3.0 on which Goggle Wave will lead the way.
You wrote a good blog on the subject I look forward to reading more from you.

TOP IDEA: Aurian Campbell I find that in my industry there is a certain amount of business banter that must occur prior to being able to make a genuine business connection. As a mental aid for networking functions, I've come up with this idea of a "credibility threshold" (that I illustrate using a nerdy graph: http://bit.ly/hnP9xP) that I feel must be reached before valuable networking can occur. Does this happen in your industry? Do you have to prove you're worth listening to before you can network effectively?

If we're engaging in a good sales conversstion and they don't come off as arrogant and egotistical, when or if the conversation gets to a point where they may not know the answer I seek I may continue working with them recognizing their youth and inexperience. However, if their head is in the clouds and they come off like they know more and are wiser because youth has it while age doesn't, I will walk away either leave or avoid them. Respect is earned. If they earn my respect I will continue to work with them if I'm in a buying mood.

Thanks so much for your comments! It's something I've been thinking about a lot, so I really appreciate the feedback :-).

@Tom - I think you hit the nail on the head re: younger people - just be interested in learning and ask good questions. You raise a good point about audience, though, too. The credibility threshold for a client would be completely different than for a colleague, and I know I'd use different tactics for crossing the threshold with an engineer than I would with an exec. I suppose it comes back to the old "know your audience" adage.

@Linda - you are so right that attitude makes or breaks it. I've seen many and enthusiastic young professionals crash and burn when they are faced with more experienced professionals for just that reason. There is a fine line between confidence that allows you to engage with those more experienced than you, and arrogance that will turn them off entirely.

Brett Kunsch My new post "Women and the Future" http://bit.ly/emMrCg was sparked by Sheryl Sandberg: "190 heads of state - 9 are women. Of all the people in parliament in the world, 13% are women. In the corporate sector, women at the top, C-level jobs, board seats — tops out at 15, 16%. The numbers have not moved since 2002 and are going in the wrong direction. So the question is, how are we going to fix this? How do we change these numbers at the top? How do we make this different?" >>> What's your take?

I'm hoping that attitude is changing - there is no reason for one generation to have it hard because another one did. It was a study done by Pink magazine, but I forget the details. I don't think women feel this way because they think other women are more of a competition.
I do think there might be a component of being perceived as weak by associating with other women, a perception that probably dates back to the days of secretarial pools - "girls" who got ahead didn't hang out with assistants.

Brett Kunsch: Ah, I totally see your point now. Let us hope that the attitude does change!
